### 洞山三頓

> Dongshan's Three Meals

雲門因洞山參次。門問曰。近離甚處。山云査渡。門曰夏在甚處。山云湖南報慈。門曰幾時離彼。山云八月二十五。門曰放汝三頓棒。山至明日却上問訊。昨日蒙和尚放三頓棒。不知過在甚麼處。門曰飯袋子。江西湖南便恁麼去山。於此大悟。

> Yunmen asked Dongshan during a visit, "Where have you come from recently?" Dongshan said, "Chadu." Yunmen asked, "Where did you spend the summer?" Dongshan said, "Baoci in Hunan." Yunmen asked, "When did you leave there?" Dongshan said, "On the twenty-fifth of August." Yunmen said, "I'll spare you three blows of the staff." The next day, Dongshan came to pay his respects and asked, "Yesterday, you kindly spared me three blows. I don't know what my fault was." Yunmen said, "You rice bag! So you go on like this, wandering between Jiangxi and Hunan?" At that, Dongshan had a great awakening.

無門曰。雲門當時便與本分草料。使洞山別有生機一路。家門不致寂寥。一夜在是非海裏。著到直待天明。再來又與他注破。洞山直下悟去。未是性燥。且問諸人。洞山三頓棒合喫不合喫。若道合喫。草木叢林皆合喫棒。若道不合喫。雲門又成誑語。向者裏明得。方與洞山出一口氣。

> Wumen said: Yunmen immediately gave Dongshan his due portion, allowing Dongshan to find a new path of life, so that their lineage would not become desolate. That night, Dongshan was caught in a sea of right and wrong, waiting until dawn. Then Yunmen came again and explained it thoroughly for him. When Dongshan was directly awakened, he was not yet truly decisive. Now I ask you all: should Dongshan have received those three blows or not? If you say he should have, then all the grasses, trees, and forests should also receive blows. If you say he should not have, then Yunmen would be guilty of lying. If you can understand this point clearly, only then can you breathe a sigh of relief for Dongshan.

頌曰。

> The verse says:

獅子教兒迷子訣 擬前跳躑早翻身無端再敘當頭著 前箭猶輕後箭深

> The lion teaches its cub the secret of leading astray— It feigns a leap forward, then swiftly turns around. Without cause, it recounts the strike aimed at the head— The first arrow was light, but the second pierces deep.
