### 國師三喚

> National Master's Three Calls

國師三喚侍者。侍者三應。國師云。將謂吾辜負汝。元來却是汝辜負吾。

> The National Master called his attendant three times, and the attendant responded three times. The National Master said, "I thought I had failed you, but it turns out you have failed me."

無門曰。國師三喚舌頭墮地。侍者三應。和光吐出。國師年老心孤。按牛頭喫草。侍者未肯承當。美食不中飽人飡。且道那裏是他辜負處。國清才子貴。家富小兒嬌。

> Wumen says: When the National Teacher called three times, his tongue fell to the ground. The attendant responded three times, but only echoed the light. The National Teacher, old in years and lonely in heart, forced the ox’s head to eat grass. The attendant, however, was unwilling to accept it. Fine food doesn’t satisfy one who is already full. Tell me, where was the National Teacher’s fault? A clear court raises talented scholars, a rich household spoils its children.

頌曰。

> The verse says:

鐵枷無孔要人擔 累及兒孫不等閑欲得撑門并拄戶 更須赤脚上刀山

> Iron cangues, with no holes, must still be carried by someone— The burden falls on sons and grandsons, no trivial matter. If you wish to prop up the door and support the household, You must even walk barefoot up a mountain of knives.
