### 洞山三斤

> Dongshan's Three Pounds

洞山和尚。因僧問。如何是佛。山云。麻三斤。

> Master Dongshan was once asked by a monk, "What is Buddha?" The master replied, "Three pounds of hemp."

無門曰。洞山老人參得些蚌蛤禪。纔開兩片。露出肝膓。然雖如是且道。向甚處見洞山。

> Wumen said: "The old master Dongshan realized a kind of 'clam meditation.' As soon as he opened its two shells, his liver and intestines were exposed. However, even so, tell me: Where can you see Dongshan?"

頌曰。

突出麻三斤 言親意更親來說是非者 便是是非人

> Three pounds of hemp stands out stark and clear, Words of closeness grow closer still. Those who speak of right and wrong, Are themselves the ones entangled in it.
