### 平常是道

> The Ordinary Mind Is the Path

南泉因趙州問。如何是道。泉云。平常心是道。州云。還可趣向否。泉云。擬向即乖。州云。不擬爭知是道。泉云。道不屬知。不屬不知。知是妄覺。不知是無記。若真達不擬之道。猶如太虛廓然洞豁。豈可強是非也。州於言下頓悟。

> Nanquan was asked by Zhaozhou, "What is the Path?" Nanquan replied, "An ordinary mind is the Path." Zhaozhou asked, "Can one intentionally approach it?" Nanquan said, "If you try to approach it, you miss it." Zhaozhou asked, "Without intending, how can one know it is the Path?" Nanquan said, "The Path does not belong to knowing, nor does it belong to not knowing. Knowing is a deluded perception; not knowing is blank indifference. If one truly reaches the Path beyond intention, it is like vast empty space, open and clear. How could one force it into right or wrong?" At these words, Zhaozhou suddenly became enlightened.

無門曰。南泉被趙州發問。直得瓦解氷消分疎不下。趙州縱饒悟去。更參三十年始得。

> Wumen said: When Nanquan was questioned by Zhaozhou, he was at a loss, unable to explain himself, as if his very foundations were shattered. Even if Zhaozhou attained enlightenment then, he would still need another thirty years of practice to truly understand.

頌曰。

> The verse says:

春有百花秋有月 夏有涼風冬有雪若無閑事挂心頭 便是人間好時節

> Spring brings a hundred flowers, autumn brings the moon, Summer brings cool breezes, winter brings snow. If nothing trivial weighs on your mind, Then every season is a wonderful time in this world.
