### 雲門屎橛

> "Yunmen's Shit-Stick"

雲門因僧問。如何是佛。門云乾屎橛。

> Yunmen was once asked by a monk, "What is Buddha?" Yunmen replied, "A dried shit-stick."

無門曰。雲門可謂。家貧難辨素食。事忙不及草書。動便將屎橛來。撑門拄戶。佛法興衰可見。

> Wumen said: Yunmen can be described as, "A poor family finds it hard to prepare a vegetarian meal; when busy, one cannot even write in cursive script." At the slightest move, he brings out a shit-stick, propping up the gate and supporting the door. The rise and fall of the Dharma can thus be seen.

頌曰。

> The verse says:

閃電光 擊石火 眨得眼 已蹉過

> Lightning flashes, Striking stone sparks fire— Before you can blink, The moment's already gone.
