> Longxiang Longtan

> Longtan, because Deshan had come to seek his guidance, waited until nightfall. Longtan said, "It's late. Why don't you go back?" Deshan then bid him farewell and lifted the curtain to leave. Seeing it was dark outside, he turned back and said, "It's dark outside." Longtan lit a paper candle and handed it to him. As Deshan was about to take it, Longtan blew it out. At that moment, Deshan suddenly had an awakening. He then bowed in gratitude. Longtan asked, "What principle have you seen?" Deshan replied, "From today onward, I will no longer doubt the words of the old masters under heaven." The next day, Longtan ascended the hall and said, "Among you, there is a man whose teeth are like a sword tree, whose mouth is like a blood basin. A single blow would not make him turn back. In the future, he will uphold my teaching at the peak of a solitary mountain." Deshan then took his commentaries and notes, and before the Dharma hall, raised a torch and said, "Even exhausting all profound discernment is like a single hair cast into vast space; exhausting all the world's mechanisms is like a single drop thrown into a great abyss." With that, he burned the commentaries and notes. Then he bowed and took his leave.

> Wumen says: When Deshan had not yet left the mountain pass, his mind was agitated and his mouth was silenced. He came south with determination, intending to destroy the teaching of the separate transmission outside the scriptures. When he reached the road to Lizhou, he asked an old woman to buy some refreshments. The old woman said, "Great Master, what text is in your cart?" Deshan said, "A commentary on the Diamond Sutra." The old woman said, "The sutra says: the past mind cannot be grasped, the present mind cannot be grasped, the future mind cannot be grasped. Great Master, which mind do you wish to refresh?" Deshan, struck by this question, was rendered speechless, his mouth like a flat pole. Yet even so, he was not willing to die beneath the old woman's words. So he asked her, "Is there any great teacher nearby?" The old woman said, "Five miles away there is the monk Longtan." When he arrived at Longtan's place, he thoroughly exposed his shortcomings—truly, his earlier words could not match his later actions. Longtan, like one who loves his child and fails to see his faults, noticed that Deshan had a small spark of potential. He hastily took foul water and drenched him with it, extinguishing the flame. Looking at it calmly, it's a good laugh.

> The verse says:

> Seeing someone in person is better than just hearing their name, Yet hearing their name can surpass meeting them in person. Though one may save the nostrils, What a pity to blind the eyes.
