### 外道問佛

> A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha.

世尊因外道問。不問有言。不問無言。世尊據座。外道贊歎云。世尊大慈大悲。開我迷雲。令我得入。乃具禮而去。阿難尋問佛。外道有何所證贊歎而去。世尊云。如世良馬見鞭影而行。

> The World-Honored One, when a heretic asked him, "I do not ask about the spoken, nor do I ask about the unspoken." The World-Honored One remained seated. The heretic praised him, saying, "The World-Honored One, in great kindness and compassion, has cleared the clouds of confusion before me and allowed me to enter." He then paid his respects and left. Ananda later asked the Buddha, "What did the heretic realize that he left praising you?" The World-Honored One replied, "Like a fine horse in the world, it moves at the sight of the whip's shadow."

無門曰。阿難乃佛弟子。宛不如外道見解。且道外道與佛弟子相去多少。

> Wumen says: "Ananda was a disciple of the Buddha, yet his understanding was not as good as that of a heretic. Now, tell me: how much distance is there between a heretic and a disciple of the Buddha?"

頌曰。

劍刃上行 氷稜上走 不涉階梯懸崖撒手

> Walking on the edge of a sword, treading on ice-cold ridges, without touching a single step. Let go at the cliff's edge.
