### 趯倒淨瓶

> "Overturning the Pure Vase"

溈山和尚。始在百丈會中。充典座。百丈將選大溈主人。乃請同首座。對眾下語。出格者可往。百丈遂拈淨瓶。置地上。設問云。不得喚作淨瓶。汝喚作甚麼。首座乃云。不可喚作木𣔻。也百丈却問於山。山乃趯倒淨瓶而去。百丈笑云。第一座輪却山子。也因命之為開山。

> Master Guishan was initially in Baizhang's assembly, serving as the rice steward. Baizhang was about to select the master for Dagui Mountain, so he invited the head monk to make a statement before the assembly, saying that whoever could offer an extraordinary remark would be chosen. Baizhang then took a water pitcher, placed it on the ground, and posed a question: "You cannot call it a water pitcher. What would you call it?" The head monk said, "Then you can't call it a wooden block either." Baizhang then asked Guishan the same question. Guishan kicked over the pitcher and walked away. Baizhang smiled and said, "The head monk has lost to Guishan." He then appointed Guishan as the founding master of the mountain.

無門曰。溈山一期之勇。爭奈跳百丈圈圚不出。檢點將來。便重不便輕。何故𦗚。脫得盤頭。擔起鐵枷。

> Wumen says: Weishan's moment of bravery—how could it escape the trap set by Baizhang? Upon reflection, this was heavy rather than light. Why? Though he removed the wooden headpiece, he took up an iron yoke instead.

頌曰。

> The verse says:

颺下笟籬并木杓 當陽一突絕周遮百丈重關攔不住 脚尖趯出佛如麻

> Throwing down the winnowing basket and wooden ladle, In the glaring sun, one sudden breakthrough—no more barriers. Even Baizhang's heavy gate cannot hold it back, With a tip of the toe, they kick out Buddhas thick as hemp.
