> First Case: The World-Honored One Ascends the Seat

> The master addressed the assembly, saying: "Shutting the door and sleeping deeply is for those of the highest capacity. Gazing at the mirror and stretching lazily is a skillful means for those of average and lesser capacity. But how can we bear those who carve crooked wood and play with ghostly eyes? If there is someone here who refuses to go along with this, step forward. And yet—I cannot blame them."

> The World-Honored One once ascended the teaching seat. Manjushri struck the wooden gavel and said, "Behold the Dharma of the Dharma King; the Dharma of the Dharma King is thus." The World-Honored One then descended from the seat.

> <note>Don't let it drift into your eyes, or it will be hard to get it out.</note> <note>Missed the chance to connect.</note> A glimpse of true nature, do you see it? The weaving mother works her loom, subtle and unceasing. <note>Great skill appears clumsy.</note> <note>Yin and Yang follow their course, the seasons spare no one.</note> She weaves an ancient brocade, holding spring's image within, Yet how can the East Wind keep it from being revealed?

> The master said, "Tiantong spoke of 'a genuine breeze—do you see it?' Is it when the World-Honored One ascended the seat that there is a genuine breeze? Or when Tiantong raised this verse—is that a genuine breeze? Or when Wansong sought clarification—is that a genuine breeze? If so, wouldn't it become three separate breezes? So, what is the one genuine breeze? Moreover, each of you has a share in this—it's worth contemplating carefully." He further said, "Continuously, the transformative mother weaves the loom of principle." "Transformative mother" is another name for the creative force of transformation. The Confucian and Daoist traditions are rooted in the one vital energy, while the Buddhist school is based on the one mind. Guifeng said, "Primordial energy is also created by the mind," all of which is encompassed within the perceived aspect of the ālaya-vijñāna. Wansong said, "This is the authentic lineage of Caodong, the lifeblood of ancestors and buddhas. The pivot of the mechanism fits into the hub's mouth—subtle in its turning. Continuous threads emerge from the shuttle's core—precise in their application. How can this be spoken of in the same breath as erroneous causes or no cause at all?" Then, in the verse praising the World-Honored One's implicit teaching, it says: "Woven into an ancient brocade, containing the image of spring." Although it is like an insect carving wood, occasionally forming patterns, yet it is as if a cart made behind closed doors fits perfectly on the road outside. In the end, Mañjuśrī dismantles it, yet says, "What can be done? The spring lord has already revealed it." When Mañjuśrī struck the gavel, the World-Honored One descended from his seat. But when Mahākāśyapa struck the gavel, a hundred thousand Mañjuśrīs appeared. Both occurred in similar circumstances—why were the gathering and releasing different? Tell me, where is it that the spring lord revealed it? "Diligently untie the knot of the clove, releasing the free spring on the branch tips."
