Verses on the Dharma Collection, Chapter 4: Heedlessness

Living by the precepts is the path to the nectar of liberation; Recklessness is the road to death. Those free of greed do not die; Those who lose the path destroy themselves. The wise follow the path and prevail, Never falling into delusion and intoxication. Freedom from greed brings joy and happiness, And from this, one attains the noble path. Always cultivate wholesome qualities, Guard yourself firmly and steadily. The wise seek inner stillness— There is no higher blessing. Delusion and intoxication are like imprisoning yourself; To cast them off is the mark of a worthy person. Having ascended the hall of wisdom, One leaves danger behind and finds peace. The wise look upon the foolish As a mountain looks down upon the ground. Let go of arrogance and pride; The wise cultivate clarity and wisdom. Set forth with diligence and heedfulness, Restrain yourself and tame your mind. Skillfully light the lamp of wisdom— Darkness destroys itself. Right mindfulness always arises; A still mind is easily freed. Live by the Dharma with self-restraint— Your good name remains unblemished. Focus your mind, do not be reckless; Train your mind in the sage's precepts. Do not associate with base and defiling teachings; Do not keep company with heedlessness. Do not plant the roots of wrong views; Do not add to the evil in the world. Right view is the higher path, Discerned by worldly wisdom. Through hundreds of thousands of lives, One never falls into hell. Those who practice heedlessness Are companions of the foolish. With calm abiding and insight undistracted, Like a wealthy person guarding treasure, Do not delight in conflict and contention, Nor be addicted to sensual pleasures. Keep in mind the value of heedfulness— Thereby you shall attain great peace. Do not indulge yourself with the times; One who restrains the taints brings them to an end. Recklessness gives Mara his chance, Like a lion pouncing on a deer. Recklessness brings four misfortunes: Fondness for violating others' spouses, First, hell; second, little merit; Third, ruin; fourth, sleep. Without merit and blessing, one falls into evil; Fearful, one fears and finds little joy. The king's law adds heavier punishment; After death, one enters hell. One does not create these by nature alone; Knowing the truth, one does not act on impulse. Do not dwell on crooked paths— The foolish strain their minds and struggle.

A wise person is like a bright lamp; those in darkness gain a candle from them. They guide and lead people of the world, like eyes guiding those without eyes.

If one acts unskillfully, one is like that person without eyes— traveling the road is extremely difficult, the path is dangerous and filled with fear.

If wholesome qualities grow, Mara finds no opportunity. With taints exhausted, one realizes cessation, and can attain the true fruit.

If unwholesome qualities grow, Mara constantly seeks an opening. One loses that path of cessation, and suffers endlessly.

A true holder of the Dharma need not recite and study extensively. If one has heard even a little, and fully embodies the practice of the Dharma body—

though one may recite and study many meanings, if one is heedless and does not follow what is right, one is like a cowherd counting others' cattle, and hard-pressed to attain the fruit of a renunciant.

If one hears what is unwholesome and endures it, and speaks and practices what people praise, eliminating greed, hatred, and delusion— such a one attains the nature of a renunciant.

Praise those who are heedful; criticize those who are heedless. They constantly gain rewards among humans and gods— the highest and most supreme.

If a person is heedless no more, the wise praise them. The good they do increases, and can give rise to all wholesome qualities.

If one practices heedlessness, there is no benefit in this present life. With a mind settled and unmoving— that alone is called wisdom.

A monastic who is careful and cautious— the heedless have much worry and transgression. Like an elephant pulling itself from mud, hard it is to be saved from the suffering of the deep sea.

The monk is mindful and careful; negligence brings much sorrow and fault. Shaking off the dust of all transgressions, like wind scattering fallen leaves.

The monk is mindful and careful; negligence brings much sorrow and fault. Bound tightly by deep-seated fetters, like fire burning dry wood.

The monk is mindful and careful; negligence brings much sorrow and fault. Following each step in order, one exhausts all the fetters.

The monk is mindful and careful; negligence brings much sorrow and fault. Understanding the meaning and discerning the words, one finds stillness and lasting peace.

The monk is mindful and careful; negligence brings much sorrow and fault. If the afflictions are eliminated, one can attain the joy of Nirvana.

Do not give rise to negligence; wholesome teachings should be cultivated. From this life to the next, one walks in the happiness of the Dharma.

Do not give rise to negligence; the afflictions are naturally subdued. Firmly and steadily learning wholesome teachings, one will surely attain Nirvana.

Dwelling long in negligence, with not a moment of pause, at the end of life one falls into hell, with not a moment of rest.

Negligent, without mindfulness, and without practicing proper conduct, indulging in sleep and unsuitable ways— this is an obstacle to the precepts.

Always keep away from what is unsuitable, so that mindfulness is not destroyed. Ever mindful and constantly tamed, the dust and defilements are eliminated.

A monk should be careful, keeping moral discipline unbroken. Guard your own mind well, in this life and the next.

A monk should not be careless. Having left home, follow the Buddha's teaching. Shake off the army of impermanence, like an elephant rising from a lotus pond.

By this Vinaya Dharma, do not act with carelessness. Destroy the wheel of birth and death, and forever bring suffering to an end.
