Chapter 6: Upholding Precepts
The wise uphold moral discipline, Its blessings bring three kinds of reward: In this life, they gain good repute and wealth, And after death, they are reborn in heaven.
When you see someone who maintains precepts, Protect them, for it is the mark of wisdom. By achieving true insight, They find peace in this world.
Keeping moral discipline brings happiness, And frees the body from distress. Sleep comes peacefully at night, And upon waking, there is lasting joy.
Precepts bring comfort in aging and death, Precepts done well bring peace and stillness. Wisdom is the true treasure of a person, Good fortune cannot be stolen by thieves.
What practice is good until the end? What practice gives peaceful rest? What is a person's true treasure? What cannot be stolen by thieves?

Wash away all stains of wrongdoing, Cast off pride, and harbor no doubt. Throughout life, seek the Dharma and precepts, Never stray from mindful awareness.
Discipline, concentration, wisdom, and liberation— You should observe them clearly. Those who have left dust and defilements behind, Their afflictions cease to arise.
Cultivate pure liberation, End all ignorance completely. Transcend Mara's realm, Shining bright like the sun retreating night.
Arrogance and intoxication— A monk should stay far from them. The three trainings: precepts, concentration, wisdom— Pursue them fully without neglect.
Neither be lax nor self-indulgent, Harbor no attachment to existence. Thus abandon mental hindrances, Let no such obstructions arise.
A monk who guards the precepts, And constantly studies this path, Directly journeys to Nirvana, Quickly attaining purity.
Flowers' fragrance doesn't travel against the wind— Lotus, sandalwood scent the air. But virtue's fragrance wafts against the wind, A virtuous person spreads scent everywhere.
Ujjvalah, tagara, sandalwood— These flowers and their perfumes Cannot compare at all to The fragrance of moral conduct.
If one maintains precepts purely, With mindfulness and no complacency, Right wisdom brings liberation— This is called the place of peace.
