Chapter 9: Karma
One thing you must avoid above all: the liar's tongue. There is no evil they will not commit, and future suffering they cannot escape.
Better to swallow red-hot iron balls, better to drink molten copper when thirsty, than to accept offerings from the faithful while living without virtue.
A person who is undisciplined and heedless is like a piece of raw meat in the world — shameless and unafraid of wrongdoing, they will later endure the torments of hell.
If you fear painful consequences, and do not wish to experience suffering, then do not commit evil deeds — for regret will surely follow.
If you deliberately do wrong, or make others do wrong, you cannot escape the bitter results. What use is trying to run away?
Not in the sky, not in the middle of the ocean, not hiding in a mountain cave — nowhere in the world can you escape the consequences of your past misdeeds.
Living beings suffer from sorrow and pain, and cannot escape old age and death. Only the wise and compassionate can be freed from the bonds of guilt and punishment.
Those who speak falsely for bribes, Who walk themselves in crooked ways, Who slander good and virtuous people, Who wrongly oppress the righteous— Such people are entangled by their evils, And drown in deep and dangerous pits.
Every person, in what they do, Whether they incline toward good or cruel deeds, Acts for their own sake alone, And in the end, does not escape their fate.
When a body twists and turns, Only its shadow follows closely; Whether rising or moving about, The shadow never leaves its form.
But not only does the shadow follow the body— The body also follows its own shadow. Likewise, the good or evil deeds one does Never leave the person who performs them.
If someone eagerly eats poisoned food, Refusing to heed my warning, They are harmed by the poison, And only later come to realize it.
A foolish mind, not yet awakened, Practices evil, ignoring my advice, Then suffers the pains of hell, And only later understands the teaching.
Those who do evil as if in jest Must bear the results themselves; Weeping and wailing, they suffer their punishment, As their deeds catch up and bring misfortune.
Evil does not strike instantly, Like milk from a cow that curdles slowly; The harm lies hidden, waiting in ambush, Like embers covered by ashes.
Evil does not strike instantly, Like a sharp and deadly sword, But without concern for the future, One will still face its painful consequences.
Evil binds the one who does evil; The evildoer does not realize their state. When the worst evil arrives, they know it is evil, And suffering evil, they see its root.
Just as rust forms on iron, Then consumes the iron itself, So evil arises from one's own mind, And in turn destroys the one who harbors it.
