The Sutra of the Great Powerful Dhāraṇī of Unsurpassed Excellence

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple, with the Titles of State Preceptor, Grand Master

This is what I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan was in the city of Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove of Anāthapiṇḍada, together with an immeasurable assembly of Bodhisattvas.

Then, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara arose from his seat within the great assembly. He straightened his robes, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, and with palms joined respectfully, bowed his head to the feet of the Buddha. He addressed the Buddha, saying:

"World-Honored One! I now wish to proclaim a teaching that accomplishes all supreme Dharmas of the past, present, and future. I pray that the World-Honored One, out of compassion, will grant me permission."

Then the World-Honored One praised him, saying: "Excellent, excellent, Great Being! For the great benefit of all sentient beings, you wish to proclaim such a treasury of profound Dharma. I now grant you permission. Please expound it fully."

Then Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva spoke this true mantra:

"Om Aru li ka (pronounced with a half-tone) Svaha (pronounced as two syllables drawn out) Ha (drawn out)."

Then, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, having spoken this mantra, addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! This mantra is the heart of all Lotus Families. I now explain the method for attaining siddhi. If every morning before my image one creates a mandala, scatters various flowers, recites it eight thousand times, and refrains from speaking with others, then recites more to gradually strengthen memory—if one follows this practice for a full six months, one will attain great wisdom, and all that is heard will be retained without forgetting. If one bathes in purity, and before the Buddha creates three circular altars: one for the Buddha, the second for the Dharma, and the third for the Sangha, making proper offerings of flowers and incense to each, and if one holds an incense burner, offers incense, and recites the mantra eight thousand times, then even the gravest offenses—those leading to the hells, the four grave offenses, the five heinous crimes—all will be extinguished without doubt. If for six months one recites fifteen hundred times daily, all desired siddhis will be accomplished."

Another practice: after bathing and purifying oneself, sit on a seat made of three-cornered grass and recite [the mantra] 350,000 times. All spiritual accomplishments will be attained without fail. You will also be free from all physical illnesses and will certainly not suffer any sudden or violent ailments. If you recite continuously ten thousand times before Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, all virtuous wishes you seek will be fulfilled.

On the eighth or fifteenth day of the bright lunar fortnight, bathe and purify yourself, then recite this eight thousand times.[^1] This will free you from all sudden calamities in the world, and all demonic obstacles will be completely eliminated.[^2]

[^1]: This refers to the phases of the waxing moon. [^2]: "Sudden calamities" refers to unexpected disasters (accidents, illnesses), while "demonic obstacles" refers to inner afflictions and outer hindrances that obstruct spiritual practice.

"From the first day to the fifteenth day of the white moon, observe the Eight Precepts and recite the mantra ten thousand times daily. This will free you from all obstacles created by destructive forces."

From the first day of the first lunar month to the fifteenth day, set up a pure mandala before the Buddha, make offerings of incense and flowers, and recite the mantra three thousand five hundred times. Doing so will grant success in all your aspirations.

"In the morning, bathe with fragrant water and recite this 3,500 times. This will cause everyone to respect and love you, and all your wishes will be fulfilled as you desire."

First, chant this in front of the Buddha ten thousand times. Then begin reciting one hundred thousand times from the first day through the fourteenth day. This will free you from all obstacles and difficulties.

Furthermore, if good men and women create a mandala before a Buddha or before Avalokiteśvara and other Bodhisattvas, and make offerings of fragrant ointments, incense, flowers, and lamps, reciting this three thousand five hundred times, then upon leaving their bodies, they will surely be reborn at the feet of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

If one first constructs one hundred thousand stupas, and before each stupa recites the mantra ten thousand times while making proper offerings, all desired accomplishments will be attained. After passing away from this life, one will be reborn freely in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Furthermore, using earth from ant hills, build one hundred thousand small stupas. Recite the mantra 3,500 times in front of each stupa. All your deepest wishes will be fulfilled—this is the most supreme and excellent accomplishment. Whatever you set your mind on will be obtained. Even if a person has committed the four heavy offenses and the five deadly sins, these will all be purified through this practice. At the end of life, they will be reborn freely in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Before the Buddha, make a mandala using clean clay, burn aloeswood incense, and pick fine flowers. With each recitation, toss one flower at the Buddha's feet. Do this three times a day for seven days. This practice can purify all fixed karma that would otherwise lead to hell, and it will grant you success in all your endeavors.

You don't need to worry about whether the day or moon is favorable. Just choose midnight, bathe in fragrant water, put on clean clothes, and recite this 3,500 times. All bad dreams will disappear. Whatever you sincerely wish for will be revealed clearly in your dreams, without any error.

Furthermore, before me, create a mandala the size of a cowhide(The Dharma Master explained: this refers to a size roughly equivalent to a cowhide). Make it either in a square or circular shape, using a length of two to three cubits. Then, arrange eight butter lamps. Recite the mantra ten thousand times each day, continuing for one month. Maintain this daily practice without speaking to anyone. After one month, when you read the Great Vehicle Buddhist sutras, you will develop a memory that never forgets, becoming extremely intelligent. Additionally, you will see Guanyin and constantly hear the teachings.

If you wish to see Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, recite the mantra 250,000 times inside a stūpa containing relics. Then make a great offering, light lamps fueled with ghee (clarified butter), and sit on a three-cornered grass mat. Recite the mantra through the night until midnight, and the Holy One will appear in person.

When you see them, rise from your seat and make offerings with reverence. At that moment, the Bodhisattva will teach you the Dharma. After hearing this teaching, you will never again be separated from the Holy One, attaining the stage of a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva, eventually reaching Buddhahood.

"On the shore by the spring that flows directly to the sea, build one Koti Stupa from sand and in front of each stupa recite ten thousand mantras. Even heavy, unforgivable sins that would condemn one to hell will be completely erased. Moreover, a practitioner will be granted a vision of a holy being, be reborn in the Pure Land at the end of their life, and swiftly attain Buddhahood."

"Moreover, if a person builds one hundred stupas each day and recites the mantra daily for six months, all calamities within that country will be eliminated."

Again, if one builds millions of pagodas and recites the mantra millions of times, they will see Avalokiteshvara and hear the Dharma teachings. Wherever this person goes, anyone who sees them will be freed from the ocean of all suffering.

Also, if you remain silent, build numerous stupas, and recite the mantra 350,000 times, you will achieve success. Whatever you then say will always be the sound of the Dharma, and everything will go as you wish.

Each day, build three thousand five hundred pagodas. In front of each pagoda, recite seven times. Dedicate the merit from this to all beings who are suffering. This is the vow: May anyone whose karma would cause them to fall into a miserable realm be free from such suffering. Anyone who practices this will be respected like a master by all who see them. At the end of their life, they will be reborn in the Land of Peace and Bliss.

Furthermore, if inside a stupa, for a period of fifteen days, one recites the mantra countless times and dedicates the merit to all sentient beings, all of this person's great vows will be fulfilled.

"Also, if you first observe the Eight Precepts, remain silent, and recite the mantra one million times, you will attain mastery over meditative states. Another method is to recite before the feet of the Saint, and thus all forms of mastery will be achieved."

"Always cultivate a compassionate mind. Prepare a circular altar using ground sandalwood, making it the size of a lotus leaf. Perform this up to one hundred thousand times. Recite the mantra three thousand five hundred times before each altar. After doing this, read the Mahayana scriptures, and you will gain sharp wisdom. Whatever you wish to recite, be it much or little, you will be able to do so with ease."

Do not speak, and recite this before the main deity 350,000 times—then you will attain supreme and excellent wisdom.

Furthermore, without speaking, he arouses great compassion and kindness. He eats only barley, or only vegetables, or eats only alms food. He recites each syllable [of the mantra] 150,000 times separately. Whatever his heart wishes for shall be achieved, except for sexual desire. If, after properly making offerings to the holy one, he holds fragrant incense in his mouth and recites the mantra 10,000 times, wherever he goes, those who see and hear him will all be pleased.

Getting up early, taking a clean bath, putting on fresh clothes, and reciting [the mantra] a thousand times—even if famine strikes and there is no food to be found, that person will always have plenty wherever they are.

Also, cupping water in your hands and sprinkling it over yourself at midnight or early morning, while reciting as much as you can of the mantra, will free you from all fear.

Recite the mantra over a tooth-cleaning stick a thousand times, then chew it. This will grant you eloquence and make everyone respect and admire you.

Take a blessed flower. First, smell it yourself. Then give it to the person nearby. This shows complete respect and care, while honoring their wishes.

Furthermore, if one can sit properly and recite, even for a short while or a longer period, one will always find peace and happiness.

Sit upright in a quiet place and recite this 8,000 times. Whatever you sincerely wish for will be granted, except for sensual desires.

If you recite it eight thousand times, it can protect both yourself and others.

Take fresh cow dung that hasn't touched the ground yet, mix it with water to make a paste, and create an altar in front of the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, and your chosen deity. Smooth the paste into a platform, scatter fragrant flowers on top, and light a lamp fueled by ghee (clarified butter). Then, sit facing east and chant the mantra 10,000 times. Afterward, lie down to sleep on a bed of triangular-shaped grass right there at the altar, and speak your heart's wishes—everything you desire will be revealed to you, without any errors or forgetfulness.

"On the first day of the waxing moon, prepare an altar with cow dung as before, scatter fragrant flowers upon it, light three lamps, and recite the mantra 3,500 times. By the next morning, you will obtain four and a half *karshapana* coins."

Again, within a stupa or before a Buddha image, grind sandalwood powder into four small altars. Place a butter lamp on each and recite [the mantra] 2,500 times. Whatever misfortune or disaster you wish to remove for someone will be completely eliminated.

Smear a mixture of cow dung and water on the ground, creating four small circular platforms. Consecrate them with white sandalwood water for the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, and the principal deity. Scatter flowers upon them. Recite the mantra ten thousand times daily for seven days. You will then obtain various kinds of clothing.

Again, offer incense and flowers to the principal deity, light four butter lamps, and recite the mantra ten thousand times. On the twenty-first day, proceed as above.

"Furthermore, on the banks of rivers or springs that flow directly into the sea, face west toward the sacred image. Apply cow dung to the ground for purification, and offer incense and flowers to the east-facing practitioner. Chant 35,000 times. From then on, the land will enjoy timely winds and rains, and the five grains will ripen in abundance. Then chant another 10,000 times, and burn the remaining flowers from that offering. By doing this, fierce storms and heavy rains in that region will cease."

Furthermore, if a plague or disaster suddenly arises in any country, place an image of the deity in front of the city gate, properly arranged. Worship and make offerings with various fragrant flowers and foods. The calamity will then be stopped.

If you take wilted flowers that have been offered to a holy being, and recite mantras over them eight thousand times, then place them on the head of someone suffering from a severe fever, and also mix them with ghee to burn and fumigate the patient, the high fever will immediately subside.

Before a Buddha image, light a butter lamp and recite the mantra 8,000 times. Then, take the soot from the lamp and apply it to your eyes. This can cure all eye diseases.

"Then a plague of death suddenly arose in the country. At each city gate, have an image of me painted, and offer flowers born from water. Then, at midnight, take the leaves of the sugi tree(substitute with goji berries), dip them in butter, and perform the fire ritual. By the fifteenth day, the plague of death will cease."

Again, if a calamity arises from various poisonous insects, first make a proper offering before the principal deity. Then go to a good spring that is free from contamination by crows or other birds. Enter the water up to your navel. Take a thousand lotus flowers and, while holding them in your left hand, recite the mantra once over each flower and cast it into the spring. Continue until all the flowers are used, and the calamity of poisonous insects will cease.

If you recite it ten thousand times at midnight, you will certainly have no nightmares.

At noon, walk into the seawater or spring water and recite it ten thousand times. All nightmares will disappear.

Then empower

Now I will describe the method for creating the painting. Use a clean, uncut piece of cloth woven by a virgin girl—the finest quality. In the center, paint Amitābha Tathāgata, six finger-widths in height, with the gesture of teaching, seated in the lotus posture on a lotus seat. His body is pure golden in color, radiating white light.

To the Buddha's right, paint Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva; to his left, paint Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva. Both are pure golden in color with white light. Each of the two Bodhisattvas holds a white fly-whisk in their right hand and a lotus flower in their left. Mahāsthāmaprāpta is slightly smaller than Avalokiteśvara. Both are adorned with various precious ornaments, wearing jeweled necklaces and bracelets, and dressed in white robes. Their hair is tied up on top of their heads and should not be let down.

On the right side of the sun, paint the noble Bodhisattva Panḍaravāsinī (note: the White-Robed Mother of Avalokiteśvara). Her hair is also tied up on top, and she wears a jeweled crown with various precious garments as adornments. She is dressed in white robes, with a dark-colored heavenly garment. In her left hand, she holds a staff or a lasso; in her right hand, she holds a Prajñāpāramitā manuscript.

Near the lower part of Mahāsthāmaprāpta, paint a practitioner holding a flower crown or red and blue lotuses, gazing respectfully at the Buddha’s countenance.

Directly below the Buddha’s seat, paint a lotus pond, with a jeweled lotus in the center. On the right side of the lotus, paint the Nāga King Nanda; on the left, the Nāga King Upananda. Both stand with their upper bodies emerging from the water, each with one hand raised to support the Buddha’s seat and hold the lotus. Their faces are joyful, their bodies adorned with jewels, and their bodies are reddish in color.

On both sides of the pond, paint celestial maidens. They wear precious garments and hold flowers with both hands, raising them in offering to the Tathāgata.

Behind the Buddha, paint a wish-fulfilling jewel tree, hung with various celestial robes and precious treasures, as well as musical instruments, dancers, and singing birds. On this tree, paint celestial beings scattering flowers that rain down upon the Buddha.

After completing the painting, place it facing west in a clean location. Each time, observe the Eight Precepts. Cultivate great compassion toward all sentient beings, strongly arouse the Bodhi mind, and make sincere offerings. Before the Buddha, build a small stūpa each time, and recite the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra as well.

On the eighth or fourteenth day of the bright half of the month, make offerings to the monastic community according to your ability. If you cannot manage much, even as little as one pint is acceptable.

Before this image, use perfumed paste, incense powder, burning incense, various foods, and make offerings as prescribed. Also, offer flowers, lamps, canopies, and music. Always keep Amitābha Buddha in mind, recite his true mantra 350,000 times, and you will attain Siddhi (spiritual accomplishment). Thereafter, whatever you wish will be accomplished naturally through mindfulness.

Now I will explain the method for creating the sacred image. Take a piece of white sandalwood and carve it in the center: a figure of Amitabha Buddha, with Guanyin on his right and Mahasthama on his left. Each holds a white whisk, and their garments, jeweled ornaments, and other details should all be properly rendered—except that ponds and other scenic elements are omitted.

In front of this image, build a fire pit for the sacred offering. Place first within the pit five kinds of grain and five precious substances. Using wood from the Ashvattha tree, light the fire. Mix together ghee, honey, milk, yogurt, and various flowers, placing the mixture in containers made of gold, silver, or copper. Recite the mantra two thousand five hundred times, then perform the fire offering.

Starting from the first day of the waxing moon and continuing for seven days, if you perform three thousand five hundred fire offerings each day, whatever you seek will surely be granted in accordance with your original wish, and you will achieve success. Afterward, whatever practice you undertake will proceed freely and without obstacle.

Then use balsa wood to kindle the fire, and perform the burnt offering with husked rice and three kinds of sweets two thousand five hundred times; from the ruler on down, all will be pleased and cooperative.

Another method: burn wood from the Palāśa tree, and perform a fire offering of rice with clarified butter for two thousand five hundred recitations. In the land where this is done, the people will hold you in high regard and honor, whatever you say will be readily accepted, and you may obtain treasures and riches as you wish.

"Also using Achavallaca wood (that is, Achyranthes aspera, also known as ox knee) to kindle the fire, and performing the offering with oil, sesame, and the three sweets, one will gain deep reverence and compliance from all Shudra. "

“Again, using Asoka wood(the wood of the sorrow-free tree) as above, perform the fire offering with the three sweets for up to seven days, [and] the ruler will be compliant.

Now I will explain another method for creating a sacred image. Have a young boy observe the Eight Precepts and weave a cloth. Its width and length may be two or three cubits, with all loose threads removed. Cleanse it with pure incense smoke, then prepare various fragrant waters to wash it thoroughly. Select a master painter who has first received the Eight Precepts. While painting, he must cover his mouth and nose with silk to prevent his breath from touching the image.

In the center, paint Amitabha Tathagata—either seated on a lotus pedestal or a lion throne, in full lotus position, with his hand forming the Dharma-teaching mudra. On his right, paint Avalokiteshvara; on his left, Mahasthamaprapta. They should hold ceremonial whisks and be adorned with ornaments, as described in the standard image-making method. Above each Buddha and Bodhisattva, paint a white jeweled canopy, beautifully decorated with various nets of precious gems. Directly above each canopy, paint celestial beings holding various jeweled flowers and offering them as rain—flowers falling like raindrops—along with various forms of music in offering.

Once the painting is complete, place it inside a stupa containing relics, or before a relic vase. At midnight or dawn, recite the mantra as prescribed. When you have completed ten million recitations, you will attain spiritual success through this supreme King of True Mantras.

At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva addressed the Buddha again, saying: "I will now further explain another method for painting an image. Take a piece of white cotton cloth that has no hair or fur and has not been cut, and prepare and care for it as before. The painter must observe the eight precepts. In the center, paint Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, with a red lotus flower in his left hand and his right hand extending downward to give water to hungry ghosts. His hair is tied up on top of his head, and he wears white clothing, adorned with precious jewels and garlands as before. His celestial robe is black, and he sits in the full lotus posture on a lotus flower. On the left side, paint Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, and on the right side, paint Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, each holding a white fly whisk. After painting the image, place it inside a stūpa containing relics, facing west. Offer whatever incense and flowers you can obtain, according to your means, and make offerings continuously. Recite the mantra without interruption for one million repetitions. All premature deaths, evil obstacles, and difficulties faced by the practitioner will be eliminated. Alternatively, the practice may reveal methods for dispelling such calamities."

In front of this image, offer the Dhataki flower,(combined) while reciting the mantra once for each flower. After making the offering, lie down on a bed of three-bladed grass before the image. Then, in a dream, you will see the sacred being, who will clearly reveal to you everything you seek and every matter you need to accomplish.

Again, one should make offerings according to the law using a Kharī of fragrant water mixed with clarified butter. This will result in achieving a high official position, and wherever one is stationed, one will possess great authority. (Note: In the Sanskrit version, one does not recite mantras; it is sufficient to perform the rituals as described above once each, and the merit will not be lost.)

Furthermore, by offering one thousand million *jañca-sumanā* flowers, one will be able to see the holy beings and hear them teach the Dharma. One will also be free from the calamity of harm by various poisons—indeed, no poison will be able to touch their body. At the end of their life, they will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Then twenty-five hundred keli-flowers with double petals should be offered for three seven-day periods, thus attaining the highest rank and longevity.

Further, one offers two thousand five hundred leaves of akṣa flowers daily for the full month, just as described above. Doing so also earns the affection of one’s ruler.

"Furthermore, at night, offer an image two thousand five hundred petals of the Dhyana flower. Doing so will surely bring victory in any contest or competition."

"In the early evening, take an earthenware bowl and fill it with various grains. Cover it with *shepherd's purse* flowers (闍智娑末那花), and recite the mantra 2,500 times. Do this three times a day—early evening, midnight, and pre-dawn. At dawn, after rinsing your mouth, recite the mantra over a twig 8,000 times before chewing it. After chewing, take a mouthful of the grains from the bowl. You will then attain eloquence and prevail in all debates."

Now, if you place a clay bowl full of black pepper before a sacred image, and recite mantras over it eight thousand times during the first part of the night, then in the morning, wash the pepper with scented water and recite mantras over it one thousand more times — if you then hold some of that pepper in your mouth, everything you say will be respected by others, and no one will dare go against your words.

Another method: place a clay bowl filled with cow's gallstone before this statue, and cover it with a fragrant flower. Recite the mantra 1,000 times at midnight. At dawn, first rinse your mouth and wash up. Then recite the mantra 800 times over clean water, and use it to wash the cow's gallstone. Apply a dot of it on your forehead. Then everyone who sees you will feel respect and kindness.

Then, before the statue, place in an earthenware bowl the substances *sandha* and *parīyaka*, and cover them with a fragrant flower. At each of the three periods of the night, recite the mantra over them two thousand five hundred times. At dawn, anoint your body with the mixture. Any place you go will inspire goodness. If you meet an angry person, they will immediately become joyful upon seeing you.

Further, take the following five ingredients in equal measure: the Naga flower, the Calamus root, Vali-yaka, Shiri-bhesha, and Takka-taka. Place them together in a bowl, cover with fragrant blossoms, and at midnight recite the mantra over them two thousand five hundred times. At daybreak, send a pure young maiden dressed in white to grind the mixture on a smooth stone. Then apply this paste to the body from head to toe. (The effect on anyone who sees the practitioner will be as described before.)

Again, before the statue, take equal parts of saffron, aloeswood, white sandalwood, and camphor powder—these four ingredients mixed together. Place them in an earthenware bowl and cover them with trumpet-flower blossoms. At midnight, recite the mantra two thousand five hundred times over the mixture. At dawn, apply it to your body. This follows the same procedure as before.

"Again, take curcuma, orpiment, and bezoar (also known as ox gallstone) — three substances — and place them in a bowl. From midnight until dawn, recite the mantra 2,500 times over the mixture. At daybreak, apply a dot of it on your forehead, and all who see you will hold you in respect and affection."

I will now explain another method for creating an image. Take a piece of cloth that is uncut and free of hair, and prepare it as before—either clean it well or use a smooth, flat wooden board. In the center, paint Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva seated on a lotus throne, adorned with seven precious jewels, wearing either dyed or white robes. On the left side, paint a lasso and a *dantaka*(two syllables) ground. On the right side, paint Mount Sumeru, with the great ocean swirling around its base. Above the Bodhisattva, paint colorful clouds, and in the clouds, paint celestial beings raining down various flowers as offerings. Once the painting is complete, place it facing west on the bank of a sacred spring that flows directly into the sea. Recite the mantra one million times as before, and you will become a lord among all *vidyadhara* (wisdom-holders). If you recite three million more times, you will become a universal monarch among all *vidyadhara*.

"Furthermore, when you chant one hundred thousand mantra repetitions, you attain the rank of a great general. When you chant three hundred and fifty thousand mantra repetitions, you attain the highest noble status.

Previously, I recited this 2,500 times daily, receiving four Kārṣāpaṇas each day.

On the twelfth or thirteenth day of the bright half of the month, observe the Eight Precepts and recite it ten thousand times. This will bring you close to a high-ranking official.

"Then, at a crossroads, light four lamps and make offerings of milk, cheese, and other foods. Recite this 2,500 times, then sleep under a nearby tree. During the night, you will dream of a yakshini (a female spirit) who will come and say to you: 'Venerable one, what do you need? What would you have me do?' The practitioner should reply: 'Act as my mother or sister.' And that woman will follow your instructions accordingly."

First, receive the Eight Precepts. Then, beneath the Ashvattha tree, hang an image and recite the mantra three and a half lakh times. After that, offer incense, flowers, milk, curds, cooked rice, fruits, and so on. Once these are arranged, engage in uninterrupted recitation without pause.

At that time, a Yaksha appears in the form of a Brahmin and says to the practitioner: "What task do you command me to perform?" The practitioner replies: "You shall be my servant." And that Yaksha accepts the command. From then on, every day at sunset, it comes to receive instructions for the tasks to be carried out.

If the practitioner fails to follow the proper procedures, the Yaksha may become angry and cause harm. If the Yaksha refuses to obey orders, one must use the Subduing Method. In general, one should employ the Subduing Method when commanding spirits.

Hang a portrait beneath a Vilva tree. Before it, burn a mixture of five ingredients: onion residue, cat feces, chaff, sesame seeds, and roasted ground black soybeans. Recite the mantra ten thousand times. Then a spirit will appear. Do not be alarmed. Say to it: "You shall be my messenger." From that point on, no matter how difficult or painful the task, it will not dare to disobey.

"Also, if you paint an image before the door of an Asura cave and recite the mantra a million times as prescribed, an Asura woman will appear and invite the practitioner inside. Once inside, you will attain a position of freedom among the Asura kings, living for an entire kalpa until the coming of Maitreya."

Now I will further explain the method of carving an image [of Avalokiteshvara]. You may use either gold, silver, or fragrant wood, and carve a statue of Avalokiteshvara to the measure of six finger-widths. The left hand should hold a lotus flower, and the right hand should display the "Fearless" gesture [Abhaya Mudra].

Once the statue is finished, place it inside a sacred reliquary stupa. First, recite the mantra for two and a half lakh [250,000 times]. Then, take a branch of the Ashoka tree and weave it into a small basket. Obtain *manada* [*manada*] [possibly a medicinal herb or resin], along with *suvari* [*suvari*] and *antsa* [*antsa*] [possibly other sacred substances], and place whichever of these you have available into the basket.

Make proper offerings in front of the image, establish a sacred boundary, protect your body, and engage in limitless recitation [of mantras]. Continue until the basket produces a sound. Once the sound is heard, apply that medicine to your eyes. Then your body becomes purified, your lifespan extends to one kalpa, and among all the accomplished sages [Vidyadharas], you will attain sovereign mastery [Rajan-style freedom].

First, find a yellow cow that has a calf. Take ghee from this cow and also its milk, and put them in a copper vessel. Use hili, tora, anjadoma, nada-shila, along with gold powder, brass powder, and copper powder. Mix and grind these six ingredients together, then form them into pills, and store them in a copper vessel. Apply this medicine until fire appears, then take one pill and place it in your mouth. Your body will become purified. When you spit it out, it becomes visible. You will live for ten thousand years, and have control over all things—except for sexual desire. At death, you will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Use gold, silver, or quality iron to properly craft a blade, a wheel, jewelry, or a begging bowl. Place these items on the leaves of an Ashvattha tree, and recite mantras without limit until the items begin to tremble. Once you see them move, take them in your hand. This will make you a radiant immortal, with a lifespan of one kalpa. You will then behold the Sage, and after hearing the Dharma from them, attain liberation.

"Also, mix cow gallbladder and anjana with daruha to form pills and hold in the mouth. Recite the mantra without limit before the image. Eventually, when the image’s eyes move or blink, you will gain authority among people and your own eyes will become clear and bright."

"Then, in front of the image, chant three lakshas [300,000 recitations], make offerings of one hundred thousand lotus blossoms, and then recite another ten million [one koti]. Afterwards, fall asleep right at the place of recitation. In your dream, you will see Amitabha Buddha and the assembly of bodhisattvas, hear them teaching the Dharma, and attain the stage of a non-retrogressing bodhisattva."

I will now further explain the method for shaping a clay statue. Use clean yellow clay to create an image of Guanyin, either one or two cubits in height, following the same guidelines as before. Place a round brazier in front of the image, and before the brazier arrange a small circular altar made of various incenses. Take fresh cow dung that has not yet touched the ground and form it into the shape of the person you wish to influence. Holding a sharp knife, cut this dung figure into pieces, casting one piece at a time into the fire as a burnt offering, until the entire figure is consumed. Repeat this process three times a day for one month. Whatever person you have in mind will then respect and cherish you as a servant does their master.

"Next, create a human-like form from various fragrant substances and burn it using Ashoka wood fire. For a male figure, begin from the right foot; for a female, from the left foot. Using a sharp blade, offer pieces of it into the fire as an oblation. Continue this practice during the prescribed times and lunar phases. Anyone who witnesses or hears this offering will receive whatever they wish."

"Again, use yellow millet and rice husks to form human figures. Light a fire with波罗多迦[1] wood, then perform a fire offering ritual at the proper times—days, hours, and months as described above. By doing this, all spirits and deities will respond to your wishes, offering their reverence and offerings. They will also bestow all kinds of wealth, grains, and other treasures, granting whatever you ask without fail."

(Bōluóduōjiā) is likely a phonic rendering of a Sanskrit term; in target translation, a footnote or contextual gloss may be considered if allowed, but note that parentheticals are prohibited here. The name is kept phonic in this translation as per conventions.

Then, using oil and hemp residue to form a human figure, burn it with the fire of *Acacia sinuata* (soapberry) wood—the ritual being a Brahmin practice—and proceed as before. After twenty-one days, all *Rākṣasas* will heed your thoughts and treat you with care.

Take glutinous rice and shape it into a human figure. Then burn wood from the madder tree, following the same method as before, for twenty-one days, as previously instructed.

"Also, shape the fresh butter, then the teacher cuts the wood. The rest is as before. After one month, everything follows the previous instructions."

"And then, using a mixture of cooked rice and ghee, shape them into forms, burn sticks of palāśa wood as described before. After one month has passed, follow all the instructions as previously given for the heavenly ritual."

Take milk curds and cooked rice to form a human figure, then burn it with wood from the Ashoka tree, as before, for one full month, with compassion just as before.

Take yellow millet and shape it into a human figure. Then burn Ghattara wood, as described above, for one month. All the Gandharvas will appear, as before.

Mix peas, yogurt, and honey together, shaping them into a human figure. Then burn the wood of the shanmoyi tree as before. For one month, direct the ritual towards Maheshvara and his attendants, just as described above.

"Take sesame dregs, or mix sesame with buckwheat flour to form a human-shaped figure, as described above. All fierce and harmful spirits will be subdued and will not disobey your commands."

Now I will explain another teaching. Recite this two thousand five hundred times at a stupa, and you will attain the state of Varuśiva. All the teachings described above will be fully accomplished.

Just reciting the mantra silently in the mind, without speaking aloud, can eliminate all evil karma and obstacles created in previous lifetimes. Reciting it aloud eliminates all current karmic obstacles and immediately brings about auspicious signs.

Then he directly entered the seawater up to his waist and recited the mantra two and a half lakh[^1] times. At that moment, the sage appeared and expounded all meritorious virtues and wholesome teachings.

[^1]: A lakh is a unit in the Indian numbering system equal to one hundred thousand (100,000). So "two and a half lakh" means 250,000 recitations.

"Additionally, if one gathers two hundred fifty thousand blossoms from the Jāti-sumeru tree(二合) and casts them one by one into a spring while reciting a mantra, the sacred being will reveal the Dharma method for eliminating all karmic obstacles and transgressions."

Furthermore, if one makes offerings to the holy ones every day and recites this mantra twenty-one times with focused intention, all negative karma and obstacles will be completely eliminated without exception.

Then, reciting the mantra with focused mind, visualize the heart taking the form of a stupa. Recite this up to eight hundred times, and at the end of life, this person will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

If one builds a pagoda one cubit tall and recites the dhāraṇī in front of it eight hundred times, all karmic obstructions and misdeeds will be eliminated. At the end of life, the rewards will be the same as mentioned above.

"Whether before or after a meal, whether sitting, lying down, walking, or standing still, simply recite it with heartfelt mindfulness. You will attain the stage of non-retrogression from which a Bodhisattva never falls back, and at the moment of death, you will behold the Holy One face to face."

If you are unable to build a stupa, simply keep the stupa in mind and recite these mantras ten thousand times each. Also, mentally offer all kinds of offerings. All heavy sins that would have led you to fall into hell will be completely eliminated.

"If you recite for the benefit of all beings, all wholesome qualities will gather around you."

Now I will speak of another method. Before a stupa or on a mountain peak, prepare a great offering. Then, before Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, take upon yourself the eight precepts, and eat a meal of barley and milk. Recite the mantra three and a half lakhs of times. This accomplishes the Vṛścikaśiva ritual.

"On the first day of the first month or on the fifteenth day of the second month, take the Eight Precepts and make offerings to the holy ones. Recite the text eight thousand times, and you will attain mastery. Afterward, everything you do will be accomplished freely and without obstruction."

Furthermore, if on the first day of the first month you make an offering to the sacred ones, burn aloeswood incense, and use eight thousand fragrant flower petals—reciting the mantra once and placing each petal on the bodhisattva's heart until all petals are used—and if you chant throughout the night, you will see the sacred one. If you do not see them, you will receive five hundred *Suvarna* (gold coins).

Then, performing seven thousand homa rituals using cow ghee over seven days, the king will come to venerate and respect him.

Take a branch of the manara tree and weave it into a small basket. Adorn the basket with various precious jewels. Use fire kindled from the soapberry wood of the Brahmins, and burn manara wood as an offering eight hundred times. Then, no matter who you call, whether far or near, that person will immediately come.

"Then, using ashoka wood, carve a bone mallet measuring six finger-widths. Go to a mountaintop, consume barley and milk, and recite mantras three hundred thousand times. Then, starting from the fifteenth day of the bright half of the month, fast for three days. Cover the bone mallet with ashvattha leaves and continue reciting more mantras. Eventually, a celestial maiden will appear at that place. The practitioner should then rise, greet her, and ask for whatever wish they desire. Whether she appears as a sister, mother, or wife, the celestial maiden will not dare to refuse, and will permanently provide for twelve people, offer golden nails (钉?), and also extend the practitioner's lifespan by a thousand years."

"During a lunar eclipse, take fresh butter in a clean vessel and cover it with leaves of the Ashvattha tree, while continuously reciting mantras. By the time the moon returns to its regular shape, the butter will display one of three signs: bubbling, smoke, or flame.

If it bubbles and you drink it, you will live 500 years, travel 500 miles a day, and become the foremost among invisible immortals.

If it emits smoke and you drink it, you become invisible, levitate 24 finger-widths above the ground, travel a thousand miles a day, and live 1,000 years.

If it bursts into flame and you drink it, you gain the great spiritual power of the illuminated immortals and live for three cosmic ages."

Once again, with ten thousand offerings of red lotuses and three sweets for the fire sacrifice, from this fire appears the Goddess of Fortune, excellent and wondrously beautiful, holding a lotus in her hand. She grants whatever wish is made, be it to become a mother or sister, and also gives golden nails.

After receiving the Eight Precepts, one may eat barley mixed with milk, sit on a triangular rush mat, and recite the mantra 8,000 times. All suffering from hunger and thirst shall be eliminated.

"If one enters water up to the navel and recites this one thousand times, they can see all hidden treasures underground. They can also open all gates of the Asura realm, break down the palaces of the sun and moon, subdue or summon any Nāga, and gain the power to bring either death or life. All poisons are eliminated without exception. It can also be used to perform pacifying rites, retrieve hidden treasures, attract all beings, and even grant the ability to have children to those who previously could not."

"Recite this eight hundred times, and you will be protected, prevailing over opponents without being defeated."

Within the royal palace, by practicing the above methods of protection, one will prevail over all enemies and malicious people.

Then, with six hundred thousand recitations before the stupa, cover the image with an uncut white cloth. Recite without interruption, without a fixed limit. Continue until fire emerges from the cloth. At that point, the practitioner can lead three thousand people through the sky and perform all kinds of inconceivable deeds.

Now I will explain another method. On the same image as before, you should draw the figure of Mahashri, colored white like sandalwood, adorned with jeweled necklaces and various ornaments according to the proper rules. Her hair should be tied up on top of her head, not hanging loose. Her heavenly garment should be white. Once the image is finished, make a great offering, and then recite the mantra three hundred thousand times in the prescribed manner. Success will be achieved.

I will now speak of another teaching. First, receive the Eight Precepts. Then, at a clean place or by a spring, build a stupa. Inside it, place the verse of the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. Build one stupa in the morning, and recite the [verse] eight thousand times. Do the same at midday. By this practice, you become the Wheel-Turning King among all enlightened immortals. You will always dwell with the holy ones, and journey westward to see Amitabha Buddha, extending your life for one kalpa. Countless enlightened immortals will surround you, and the Great Brahma King will come to make offerings. You will be at ease and free.

“Moreover, using wood from the tree called ‘Avari’ and ‘Mala,’ one should burn it in a fire and perform a homa ritual with eight thousand offerings of these woods mixed with three types of sweet substances. This will bring the practitioner and his retinue respect and treasures as they desire.”

Also use equal parts of asaana yao (two-in-one mixture), manaduo xi yao (two-in-one mixture), your own blood, a woman's menstrual blood, and palimoluo flowers. Grind and sift all these medicines into a powder. For three days, do not eat. Then go into a natural spring, standing in water up to your navel. Hold the powder in your hand and chant continuously without pause until a flame appears.

This medicine will cause all the eight classes of spirits—including devas, dragons, yakshas, rakshasas, and others—to come and be at your command. It can also deceive them, enable you to fully master any mantra, and make all weapons and tools seem unreal or illusory. It will even deceive beings of the past and future, let alone those of the present.

You offer the holy one a withered lotus, your own blood, and the finest clarified butter. First, before the image, prepare a small altar and make a grand offering. Take acacia wood, light a fire, and perform the fire offering with these substances—do this three times. Then, whoever comes to mind, you can command them as you wish, and they will obey you like a servant before a master. You will also gain one hundred gold ingots, and no one will dare to go against you.

Take any mixed firewood and perform a burnt offering with soil from a grave. Recite the name of the person you have in mind eight thousand times, and you will gain their respect and admiration.

“Take red mustard seed oil, along with the stems, leaves, and flowers of the mustard plant, and mix them with your own blood. Then, using Vaka wood as fuel, ignite it and perform a fire offering with this mixture. For whomever you have in mind, call out their name as mentioned above. If you recite the mantra seven times over this, that person will come hurrying to you immediately.”

First, having received the Eight Precepts and recited the mantra eight thousand times, you should have a skilled artist who also upholds the Eight Precepts paint an image of Bheluosa. Before this image, place four Asiva(two syllables) tree leaves. Next, take some ivory and some peas, as well as Mananasira medicine (either three or eight ounces). Place these three items on the leaves, then cover them with three more leaves. This should be done on the eighth or fifteenth day of the moon, or during a lunar eclipse. While constantly reciting the mantra, focus on empowering the medicine, observing for the appearance of three signs. Based on the sign you see, you will achieve either a lower, middle, or higher success.

Now I will teach a different practice. First, receive the Eight Precepts and go for alms. At the proper time, bathe in fragrant hot water, put on fresh, clean clothes, and give rise to the great Bodhi mind. Cut off greed and attachment, and cultivate loving-kindness and compassion for all beings. Recite the mantra one hundred thousand times either in a stupa or before a Buddha image.

Then, on a clean cloth, paint the image of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. He should be depicted holding a lotus flower and standing upon it. The figure should be black in color, adorned with jewels, with hair tied upward. A fine white cloth should be draped over both shoulders.

After painting the image, place it within a reliquary stupa. Then, for three days, do not eat. Before the image, make a great offering. Using *guggulu* wood mixed with ghee and honey, perform a fire offering 24,000 times.

At this point, you may see signs: the image emits light, the earth trembles, a drum sound is heard, the lamp flame gradually lengthens, or the flowers move. If you see any such sign, know that the practice is accomplished. This can purify all past evils, and you will have gained the constant protection of the original deity. All your great vows will be fulfilled at will. Wherever this person goes, they will be loved and respected by all who see them.

"Again, use Asipha-vata leaves with Suluta-anjana, and apply continuous empowerment before the image. When the three marks appear, the three Siddhis are attained."

He should bathe in scented hot water three times a day, put on clean clothes, beg for his food, and then offer it properly while reciting the mantra three hundred thousand times. Alternatively, on the twenty-third or twenty-ninth day, he should make eight thousand offerings of black sesame seeds mixed with the three sweets into the sacred fire, and he will obtain one thousand *karshapana* coins.

Holding a calamus root in the mouth, one recites endlessly. Three signs will appear, corresponding to three attainments: 1) Warmth brings intelligence, 2) Smoke grants invisibility, 3) Fire enables flight through the sky. This progression should be understood in order.

Then, with a piece of sandalwood six or twelve finger-widths long, make a tooth-cleaning stick. First, recite the mantra one hundred thousand times. Then, on the fifteenth day of the bright half of the month, continuously chant before the image without interruption. When the three signs appear, you will attain the three kinds of spiritual accomplishments.

On the first day of the first month, one should observe the Eight Precepts, bathe three times daily, and recite a hundred thousand mantras. Then, paint an image of Āryāṭāra (Arya Tara) in a color resembling sandalwood, seated on a lotus, adorned with various precious ornaments, with hair tied in a topknot. In the left hand, hold a lotus; in the right hand, a fruit. Wear a white celestial garment and a flower crown, with a compassionate expression gazing at the practitioner. After painting the image, place it inside a stupa and offer a hundred thousand white lotus flower fire offerings. Thus, one becomes the king of all clear-knowledge sages, constantly dwelling with the holy ones. One can also travel to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, cause the great Brahma Heavenly King to descend from his seat, become the ruler of the four continents, achieve freedom in whatever one wishes, personally see all Buddhas, and extend one's lifespan by one kalpa.

"If you wish to swiftly attain spiritual accomplishment, bathe with scented water each day when seeking alms. After bathing properly, recite the mantra fifty thousand times. You will definitely achieve spiritual accomplishment, and all the wishes of your heart will be fulfilled."

Then, use a white ivory tube, ornamented with gold on its exterior, and place within it "Manada" (mixed) and "Xiluo" (realgar) medicine. Set this tube before the image and recite mantras limitlessly. Empower this medicine tube with mantra recitation until the three signs appear, thereby attaining the three kinds of Siddhi.

First, recite sixteen lakhs of mantras before the image. Then place the image inside a reliquary and cover it with a white cloth. Recite without interruption until the image glows like fire. At that point, one can carry over a thousand people through the air.

Without speaking, sit on a bed of triangular grass before the image and recite the mantra one hundred and sixty thousand times. On the bright half of the month, make an offering of eight thousand pieces of Udumbara wood into the sacred fire. This ritual can cure all illnesses—none will remain uncured.

If one enters water up to their navel and recites the mantra one hundred thousand times, they will:

- See all hidden treasures within the earth - Destroy all the palaces of the titans (Asuras) - Subdue all fire spirits - Create protective boundaries - Summon all dragons (Nāgas) - Revive the dead - Construct ritual altars (mandalas) - Exercise various powers of command and summoning - Eliminate all poisons - Subdue all venomous and hostile beings - Grant children to those who seek them

Reciting it eight thousand times will bring victory in all battles and cause external enemies to surrender.

"Furthermore, take a flower made from various metals—specifically gold, silver, and copper—about six finger-widths in length, shaped like a lotus. Bathe it in fragrant water three times a day, without speaking to anyone. Recite the mantra in a stupa 500,000 times. Then, after making offerings, fast for three days. Holding the lotus continuously and reciting without pause, when the lotus begins to burn, you will be able to lead three thousand people to ascend into the sky and be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. There, you will dwell alongside all saints and bodhisattvas."

After eating barley three times a day, bathing three times and changing clothes three times, while reciting one hundred million times, one attains the Siddhi of the mind.

Then paint an image of Guanyin following the same method as before. On the right side, additionally paint the Bodhisattva Arituo Li, standing on a lotus pedestal. His body has the color of sandalwood, and he is adorned with jewels, his hair tied up on top of his head, wearing a lotus crown and pure white robes. With palms joined in reverence, he assumes a posture of bowing to Guanyin. Once the painting is done, make a great offering. Recite (the mantra) thirty thousand times, and you will attain all the accomplishments in your mind.

At that time, after the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara had spoken this profound and secret teaching, all the great bodhisattvas, the eight kinds of divine beings—including devas, nagas, and others—as well as all the vajra protectors in the assembly, heard this teaching, rejoiced greatly, paid their respects to the Buddha, and then withdrew.
