> Chapter 5: The Parable of the Herbs

> The Four Great Hearers had already awakened through the earlier parables. Then, by expressing their own faith and understanding, they demonstrated their realization—and realization must be genuine, deeply grasping the Sage's teaching: first the three vehicles, then the one. Having fully understood the Sage's fundamental meaning, in this chapter the Buddha affirms their words, thereby confirming their insight. Thus He praises, "Well said," marveling at the rarity of their understanding, and secretly draws lesser disciples upward so their practice may equal Kasyapa's. The "Medicinal Herbs" refers to how they once received and upheld the Sage's teaching; when that teaching touches the spirit, the illness of afflictions is cured, hence the chapter is named for medicinal herbs.

> The burning house narrative up to this point has been a parable to illustrate the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. Indeed, as you have said, the Tathāgata's wisdom and merit enable him to teach the path of first three vehicles and then the one vehicle. Mahākāśyapa has just used this parable to explain his understanding, and he has captured the noble intention. For this reason, I confirm and approve: it is truly as you have said.

> The Tathagata also possesses countless virtues directed toward truthfulness. This, however, is merely one aspect of his nature—and even that single aspect is inexhaustible. The meaning of this single, boundless aspect extends through countless ages without end, manifesting in threefold transformations. How could even this alone be surpassed?

> The Tathāgata perceives and understands all phenomena, reaching the stage of omniscience. The reason for attaining this stage of omniscience is twofold: first, to fully penetrate the profound meaning of all things; second, to understand the thoughts and actions of all beings. Having discerned the nature of the ailment and its corresponding remedy, taking that remedy will surely bring recovery—the affliction of mental defilements is eradicated, and ultimately, omniscience is achieved.

> The Thus Come One is likewise like this—rising like a great cloud from the Dharma body, spreading compassion’s shade over all, just as a cloud covers the sky. With a vast and boundless voice, he proclaims the truth to all—nothing goes unheard, nothing is untouched—covering humans and celestial beings alike, freeing them from the heat of affliction.

> In the midst of the assembly, they proclaimed aloud, "Come, for the sake of hearing the Dharma." The truth is clear and evident; such a call is sure to reach those it is meant for, and the way of speech spreads throughout the world. Those with affinity will surely hear it, and thus all should come here to listen to the Dharma.
