This is what I heard:
At that time, the Buddha was in the palace of the holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva on Mount Potalaka, surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattvas paying reverence. Then, in the assembly, a bodhisattva named Jewel Treasury Moonlight rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, placed his palms together, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, Tathāgata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One. I now have a question. May the Buddha, in his compassion, resolve my doubt."
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Treasury of Moonlight, saying: "You now ask me about the Dharma you wish to hear. What is its meaning? I shall explain it to you."
Then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Treasury of Moonlight, having heard the Buddha's words, spoke to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! If there are good men and good women who wish to perform the Eight Great Mandalas, how should they uphold, revere, and make offerings?"
The Buddha said: "Excellent, excellent! If there are good men and good women who, with regard to these Eight Great Mandalas, uphold, revere, and make offerings in accordance with the Dharma, they will attain great merit, give rise to Wisdom, and benefit immeasurably. Even beings throughout the three times will all achieve unsurpassed, perfect Enlightenment. Good son! Listen attentively now, and I shall explain to you these Eight Great Mandalas, which contain the root heart-mantras of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. If one constantly recites, reveres, and makes offerings, all grave sins of the five heinous deeds and all evils will be completely eradicated, and one will be able to accomplish the supreme, ultimate truth.
