### 汾陽四句東山空 東林總 慈明 語附
> Four Sentences of Fenyang
僧問。如何是接初機句。汾云。汝是行脚僧。空云。金剛杵打鐵山摧。總云。無底鉢盂光烜赫。圓云。一刀兩段。
> A monk asked, "What is the phrase that guides beginners?" Fenyang said, "You are a wandering monk." Konggu said, "A vajra pestle strikes, iron mountains crumble." Zongguo said, "A bottomless alms bowl shines brilliantly." Yuanguan said, "One cut, two pieces."
如何是辨衲僧句。汾云。西方日出卯。空云。嶽陽船子洞庭波。總云。天台楖𣗖黑𥻘𥻘。圓云。寒山拾得。
> What is the phrase of the patch-robed monk? Fenyang said: "The sun rises in the west at dawn." Konggu said: "The boatman of Yueyang, the waves of Dongting." Zonggu said: "The Tiantai walking stick, dark and unyielding." Yuangu said: "Hanshan and Shide."
如何是正令行句。汾云。千里特來呈舊面。空云。夜叉屈膝眼睛黑總云。戴盆屧履三千里。圓云。來千去萬。
> What is the true command of the teaching? Fen said: "Traveling a thousand miles to present the old face." Kong said: "The yaksha kneels, its eyes dark." Zong said: "Carrying a basin and wearing sandals for three thousand miles." Yuan said: "Coming by the thousands, leaving by the tens of thousands."
如何是定乾坤句。汾云。北俱盧洲長粳米。食者無嗔亦無喜一作無貪亦無嗔空云。經來白馬寺。僧到赤烏年。總云。人間天上一般春。圓云。天高海濶。乃云。將此四句語。驗天下衲僧大愚云。仔細思量。將此四句。驗天下衲僧却被天下衲僧勘破。大慧云。諸人要識大愚麼。三年無改於父之道。可謂孝矣。
> What is the phrase that settles heaven and earth? Fenyun said: "In Uttarakuru, the long-grain rice is eaten; those who eat it feel neither anger nor joy." Some versions say: "neither greed nor anger." Kongyun said: "The scriptures arrived at the White Horse Temple; monks came in the year of the Red Crow." Zongyun said: "In the human realm and in the heavens, spring is the same." Yuanyun said: "The sky is high, the sea is vast." Then he said: "Take these four phrases and test all the monks under heaven." Dayu said: "Think carefully. Take these four phrases to test all the monks under heaven, but in the end, they are seen through by all the monks under heaven." Dahui said: "If you wish to understand Dayu, consider this: 'For three years, he did not alter his father's way—this can be called filial piety.'"
