### 三種師子

> Three Types of Lions

浮山圓鑑示眾云。汾陽有師子句。其師子有三種。一超宗異目。二齊眉共躅。三影響音聞。若超宗異目。見過於師。可為種草方堪傳授。若齊眉共躅。見與師齊。減師半德。若影響音聞。野干倚勢異䫫何分。所以先德付囑云。若當相見。切須子細窮勘。不得鹵莽。恐誤後人之印可也。

> Master Yuandian of Fushan addressed the assembly, saying: "Fenyang had the 'lion's utterance.' This lion has three kinds: first, one who surpasses the master's lineage and sees differently; second, one who stands shoulder-to-shoulder and treads the same path; third, one who is merely an echo, a sound heard from afar. If one surpasses the master's lineage and sees differently—seeing beyond the teacher—this one can be considered a vessel for the seed of Dharma, worthy of transmission. If one stands shoulder-to-shoulder and treads the same path—seeing equally with the teacher—this one lacks half the teacher's virtue. If one is merely an echo, a sound heard from afar—like a jackal leaning on the lion's might, how can its different face be distinguished? Therefore, the ancient masters entrusted us with this: 'When you meet someone, you must carefully investigate and examine thoroughly. Do not be careless or hasty, for fear of misleading later generations in their recognition and approval.'"
