### 汾陽三訣

> Fenyang's Three Essential Points

汾陽示眾云。汾陽有三訣。衲僧難辨別。擬議問如何。拄杖驀頭楔。僧問。如何是三訣。師便打。僧禮拜。汾云。與汝頌出。

> Fenyang addressed the assembly, saying: "Fenyang has three key points. It's difficult for monks to distinguish them. If you hesitate and ask what they are, the staff will strike your head." A monk asked, "What are the three key points?" The master immediately struck him. The monk bowed. Fenyang said, "I'll give you a verse."

第一訣。接引無時節。巧語不能詮。雲綻青天月。

> The First Key: Welcoming all, without regard to season or time. No clever words can capture it— The clouds part, revealing the moon in the clear blue sky.

第二訣。舒光辨賢哲。問答利生心。拔出眼中楔。

> The second key: Shine your light to discern the wise and virtuous. Through dialogue, benefit living beings. Remove the splinter from their eye.

第三訣。西國胡人說。濟水過新羅。北地用邠銕。

> The third key: In the Western lands, the barbarians say: "The river flows past Silla; in the northern regions, they use Bin iron."
