### 汾陽三句

> Three Statements of Fenyang

汾陽上堂僧出問。如何是學人著力句。汾云。嘉州打大像。

> A monk came forward and asked, "What is the phrase for a student to exert effort?" Fenyang said, "In Jiazhou, they carved the great statue."

如何是學人轉身句。汾云。陝府灌銕牛。

> What is the phrase that allows a student to turn around? Fenyang replied: "The iron ox drinks at Shanfu."

如何是學人親切句。汾云。西河弄師子。

> What is the phrase that truly touches the student? Fen replied: The lion plays in the Western River.

又云。若人會得此三句。已辨三玄。更有三要語在。切須薦取。

> It is also said: If one truly understands these three phrases, they have already grasped the Three Mysteries. Yet, there are also the Three Essentials to be found—these must be earnestly sought and realized.
