### 汾陽十八問

> Fenyang's Eighteen Questions

汾陽云。大意除實問默問難辨。須識來意。餘者總有時節。言說淺深相度祗應。不得妄生穿鑿。彼此無利益。雖是善因。而招惡果。切須子細。

> Fenyang said: "The main point is to discern the true question behind the silence or the difficult inquiry. You must recognize the underlying intent. For all other cases, there is always an appropriate time and manner. Words and explanations should be adapted to the situation and depth of understanding. Do not recklessly force interpretations or create artificial connections. This brings no benefit to either party. Even if the intention is good, it may lead to harmful consequences. You must be extremely careful."

請益僧問馬祖。如何是佛。祖云。即心是佛。趙州云。殿裏底。

> A monk asked Master Mazu, "What is the Buddha?" Mazu replied, "The mind itself is the Buddha." Master Zhaozhou said, "The one in the temple hall."

呈解問龍牙。天不能蓋。地不能載時如何。牙云。道者合如是。

> Presenting the question to Longya: "When heaven cannot cover it, and earth cannot bear it, what is it like?" Longya replied: "One who walks the path should be just like this."

察辨問臨濟。學人有一問。在和尚處時如何。濟云。速道速道。僧擬議。濟便打。

> Cha Bian asked Linji, "I have a question. When one is in the presence of the master, what should one do?" Linji said, "Speak quickly, speak quickly!" As the monk hesitated, Linji immediately struck him.

投機問天皇。疑情未息時如何。皇云。守一非真。

偏僻問芭蕉。盡大地是箇眼睛。乞師指示。蕉云。貧兒遇餿飯。

> The secluded one asks the Banana Plant: "The entire great earth is a single eye. I beg the master to point it out." The Banana Plant says: "A pauper encounters spoiled rice."

心行問興化。學人皂白未分。乞師方便。化隨聲便打。

探拔問風穴。不會底人。為甚麼不疑。穴云。靈龜行陸地。爭免曳泥蹤。

不會問玄沙。學人乍入叢林。乞師指示。沙云。汝聞偃溪水聲麼。僧云聞。沙云。從這裏入。

擎擔問老宿。世智辨聰。總不要拈出。還我話頭來。宿便打。

置問雲門。瞪目不見邊際時如何。門云鑒。

故問首山。一切眾生。皆有佛性為甚麼不識。山云識。

借問風穴。大海有珠。如何取得。穴云。罔象到時光燦爛。離婁行處浪滔天。

實問三聖。學人只見和尚是僧。如何是佛是法。聖云。是佛是法。汝知之乎。

假問徑山。這箇是殿裏底。那箇是佛。山云。這箇是殿裏底。

審問祖師。一切諸法。本來是有。那箇是無。答云。汝問甚分明。何勞更問吾。

徵問睦州。祖師西來當為何事。州云。爾道。為何事。僧無語。州便打。

明　外道問佛。不問有言無言。世尊良久。道云。世尊大慈大悲。開我迷雲。令我得入。

默　外道到佛處無言而立。佛云。甚多。外道道云。世尊大慈大悲。令我得入。

凡有學人偏僻言句。或蓋覆將來。辨師家眼目。或呈知見。擎頭戴角。一一試之。盡皆打得。只為當面識破。或貶或褒。明鏡臨臺。是何精魅之可現。何有妖狐能隱本形者也。
