Its illuminating function manifests as the Reward Land. This is the fundamental cause of all Buddhas, and likewise the great model of all Patriarchs. The five schools divided into branches, with countless monasteries spread like stars across the land. From a single lamp, flames divided, and Dharma seats multiplied throughout the ten directions. As the Avatamsaka Sutra states: "The Tathagata neither appears in the world nor enters nirvana." Once, at the assembly on Vulture Peak, the World-Honored One glanced at the fourfold assembly with his blue lotus eyes. None could grasp his hidden meaning—only Mahakashyapa understood the Buddha's intent. The sutra records: The Buddha told Mahakashyapa, "I entrust to you the True Dharma Eye Treasury, the wondrous mind of nirvana. You must spread it widely and never let it be cut off." Again, nearing nirvana, he told Ananda: "You must propagate the twelve divisions of the scriptures." To Upali he said: "You must uphold all the precepts." To Mahakashyapa he entrusted this verse: "The Dharma originally has no Dharma, No Dharma is also Dharma. Now, when entrusting this Dharma-less state, What Dharma has ever been Dharma?" Thereupon, Mahakashyapa took the Buddha's robe and entered the samadhi of extinction in Mount Kukkutapada, awaiting the descent of Maitreya, to pass on the transmission with both hands. An ancient master remarked: "A bird perches on a shadowless tree, Flowers bloom on branchless stems. The four seas' waves grow still and clear, A single wheel—the moon in heaven."
