> Curved and Hanging Ribbons

> The term "垂" refers to how the sage lowers their means to connect with beings. "屈曲" means to shed the precious royal robes and don tattered, soiled garments. Tong'an said, "Temporarily wearing soiled robes, they call this Buddha. But who is it that dons the precious royal attire again?" The precious royal robes represent non-emergence into the world, while the soiled robes represent emergence into the world. A monk asked Master Che of Shimen, "Why did Dharma Master Yunguang become an ox?" Che replied, "In humble lanes, one does not ride a golden horse; on the return journey, one wears tattered robes." After attaining Buddhahood, the sage becomes a bodhisattva again, guiding and benefiting sentient beings. This is called "not abiding in the unconditioned and not exhausting the conditioned." Manjusri asked Vimalakirti, "How does a bodhisattva penetrate the Buddha's path?" Vimalakirti replied, "When a bodhisattva practices the non-path, that is called penetrating the Buddha's path."<note>An ancient master remarked: "Compassionate clouds spread boundlessly, covering all. A withered tree without blossoms—what can be done? Twisting right and wrong, following the crooked and straight—in this moment, the message is understood, the wind of communication flows."</note>
