> Wonderful Leaves and Additional

汝州風穴和尚示眾云。夫參學眼目。臨機直須大用現前。莫自拘於小節。設使言前薦得。猶是滯殼迷封。縱饒句下精通。未免觸途狂見。勸汝諸人。應是從前依他作解。明昧兩岐。凡聖疑情。一時掃却。直教箇箇如師子兒哮吼一聲。壁立萬仞。誰敢正眼覷著。覷著則瞎却渠眼古德著語云。一句曲含千古韻。萬重雲散月來初。垂絲千尺意在深潭。

> The Venerable Fengxue of Ruzhou addressed the assembly, saying: When it comes to the eye of genuine practice, in the decisive moment you must let the great function manifest directly. Do not confine yourself to minor details. Even if you grasp it before words are spoken, you are still stuck in the shell, lost in the seal. Even if you master it within the phrases, you’ll still be caught in wild views wherever you turn. I urge you all: whatever understanding you’ve relied on from others in the past—whether clear or obscure, dualistic or holy—sweep it all away at once. Make it so that each one of you roars like a lion cub, standing sheer as a cliff ten thousand feet high. Who would dare look straight at you? Whoever looks will be blinded. <note>An ancient master remarked: A single phrase holds the ancient melody; When the clouds part, the moon appears anew. A thousand-foot fishing line—its intent lies in the deep pool.</note>
