> Calm Mind, Constant Truth, Always Present

> Master Luopu addressed the assembly, saying: "The final phrase alone reaches the unshakable barrier. It blocks the vital ford, allowing passage neither to the ordinary nor to the sage. I often tell you all: Let the whole world rejoice as it will—I alone refuse to go along. Why? When the sacred turtle bore the chart on its back, it brought upon itself the omen of its own demise. The phoenix, entangled in a golden net, aspired to soar to the heavens—but what did it achieve? I often tell you all: You must grasp the principle beyond the literal meaning; do not seek your standard within the words. Therefore it is said: 'A stone man's function is like yours—it too can sing the songs of Ba. If you are like the stone man, even a song of snow can be harmonized.'" A monk asked Nanquan, "What is the Way?" Nanquan said, "The ordinary mind is the Way." To arrive at this ordinary Way is to see a mountain simply as a mountain, to see water simply as water. Reaching out freely, nothing is either acceptable or unacceptable. Suppose the wind comes and the trees stir, waves rise and the boat is lifted; spring gives birth, summer fosters growth, autumn harvests, winter stores away—what difference is there? If only we have favorable winds and timely rains, a peaceful nation and contented people, tranquility in the borderlands, and harmony between ruler and minister—must we wait for a qilin to appear or a phoenix to descend before we consider it auspicious? Simply let principle return to the Way, and affairs will be plain and genuine. There is no sage to seek, no ordinary to discard. Within and without, the mind is level and composed; all distinctions vanish and settle of themselves. Therefore, the words of all sages never depart from worldly truth. Accord with the world, and if you understand, you find benefit along the path; if you do not understand, worldly truth merely circulates." <note>An ancient worthy added this verse: "Often, at the place of seeing off a guest, I recall the time of parting from home."</note>
