### 黃龍三關

> Huanglong's Three Barriers

南禪師問隆慶閑禪師云。人人有箇生緣。上座生緣在什麼處。閑云。早晨喫白粥。至晚又覺饑。又問。我手何似佛手。閑云。月下弄琵琶。又問。我脚何似驢脚。閑云。鷺鷥立雪非同色。黃龍每以此三轉語。垂問學者。多不契其旨。而南州居士潘興嗣延之。常問其故。龍云。已過關者。掉臂徑去。安知有關吏。從關吏問可否。此未過關者。復自頌云。

> Zen Master Nan asked Zen Master Longqing Xian, "Everyone has a place of origin. Where is your place of origin?" Xian replied, "In the morning, I eat plain porridge; by evening, I feel hungry again." He then asked, "How are my hands like the Buddha's hands?" Xian said, "Playing the lute under the moonlight." He asked further, "How are my feet like a donkey's feet?" Xian answered, "A heron standing in snow—not the same color." Huanglong often used these three turning phrases to question practitioners, but most failed to grasp their meaning. The layman Pan Xingci from Nanzhou often asked him about this. Huanglong said, "Those who have already passed the checkpoint walk straight ahead with arms swinging—how would they know there's a checkpoint officer? Asking the officer whether one can pass—that's someone who hasn't yet gotten through." He then added his own verse:

我手何似佛手。禪人直下薦取。不動干戈道出。當處超佛越祖。

> My hand, how is it like the Buddha's hand? The Chan practitioner directly realizes it. Without raising a single weapon, the truth is spoken. Right here, one surpasses the Buddha and transcends the ancestors.

我脚驢脚並行。步步踏著無生。會得雲收月皎。方知此道縱橫。

> My donkey's hooves and my own move together. Each step touches the unborn and undying. When the clouds part and the moon shines clear, Then I know this Way spreads freely in all directions.

生緣有路人皆委。水母何曾離得蝦。但得日頭東畔出。誰能更喫趙州茶。

> All know the path where life's connections lie. Yet does the jellyfish from shrimp untie? Only when the sun rises in the east, Who then would drink of Zhaozhou's tea in haste?

蘆山旻古佛語錄云。昔見廣辨首座收南禪師親筆三關頌。諷誦無遺。近見諸方語錄。不全。又多訛舛。故茲注破。
