### 臨濟門庭

> Linji School

> The Linji School embodies great capacity and great function. It breaks free from cages and escapes fixed patterns. Like a tiger's sprint or a dragon's dash, like stars racing and lightning striking, it turns the pivot of heaven and rotates the axis of earth. Bearing a soaring spirit, it employs extraordinary methods of guidance. Rolling and unrolling, capturing and releasing, killing and enlivening—all are done in complete freedom. Therefore, it demonstrates the Three Mysteries and the Three Essentials, the Four Relationships of Host and Guest, and the Four Discernments. The "Diamond King's Precious Sword," the "Lion Crouched on the Ground," the "Probing Pole," and the "Shadow Grass"—a single shout that does not function as a mere shout. A single shout that distinguishes host and guest. Illumination and function applied simultaneously. \*\*The Four Discernments are:\*\* \* For a person of middling or lower capacity: Seize the objective realm, but do not seize the Dharma. \* For a person of middling or higher capacity: Seize the objective realm and the Dharma, but do not seize the person <note>Another version says 'seize the Dharma but not the realm' is incorrect.</note>. \* For a person of the highest capacity: Seize both the person and the objective realm. \* For a person of transcendent capacity: Seize neither the person nor the objective realm. \*\*The Four Relationships of Host and Guest are:\*\* \* When the master has true perception: This is called the "Host within the Host." \* When the student has true perception: This is called the "Guest within the Host." \* When the master lacks true perception: This is called the "Host within the Guest." \* When the student lacks true perception: This is called the "Guest within the Guest." (This differs from the Host-Guest principle of the Caodong School.) \*\*The Three Mysteries are:\*\* The Mystery within the Mystery, the Mystery of the Essence, and the Mystery within the Phrase. \*\*The Three Essentials are:\*\* Each Mystery contains the Three Essentials. Thus, within a single shout, the essence encompasses the Three Mysteries and the Three Essentials. \* The \*\*"Diamond King's Precious Sword"\*\* severs all intellectual understanding with a single stroke. \* The \*\*"Lion Crouched on the Ground"\*\* refers to speech and expression that establish majestic power, terrifying all beasts and shattering the brains of demons. \* The \*\*"Probing Pole"\*\* tests whether you have a true lineage and true perception, or not. \* The \*\*"Shadow Grass"\*\* is like deception and trickery, testing whether you see through it or not. \* \*\*"A single shout that distinguishes host and guest"\*\* means that within one shout, there inherently exists the distinction of guest and host. \* \*\*"Illumination and function applied simultaneously"\*\* means that within one shout, there is inherent illumination and inherent function. \* \*\*"A single shout that does not function as a mere shout"\*\* means that within one shout are contained all such aspects: the Three Mysteries, the Three Essentials, the Four Relationships, and the Four Discernments. In general, the character of the Linji School is simply this. Do you wish to recognize Linji? It is a thunderclap in a clear blue sky. It is waves rising on dry land. <note>Shantang Chun discussed the Three Mysteries. Linji said, "A single phrase must contain the Three Mysteries. Each Mystery must contain the Three Essentials." Its great capacity and great function—how can they be dissected and analyzed through literal meanings, terms, and categories? The various dialogues about the Mysteries and Essentials only ask, "What is the first, the second, the third?" Fenyang's verse says: "The matter of the Three Mysteries and Three Essentials is hard to divide. Grasping the meaning, forgetting the words, the Way is easily approached. One phrase, clearly, contains all phenomena. The Double Ninth Festival, the chrysanthemums anew." It was only from the time of the Ancient Pagoda Master that they were split into the Mystery of the Essence, the Mystery within the Phrase, and the Mystery within the Mystery. As for the Three Essentials, they became indescribable, left to obscurity and confusion. This text explains the gateway and foundation of the Linji School well enough, but regarding the Three Mysteries and Essentials, it unfortunately falls into the same error as the Pagoda Master. This must be clarified.</note>
