### 三句

> Three Phrases

師示眾云。函蓋乾坤。目機銖兩。不涉萬緣。作麼生承當。眾無對。自代云。一鏃破三關。後來德山圓明密禪師。遂離其語為三句。曰函蓋乾坤句。截斷眾流句。隨波逐浪句圓悟曰。本真本空。一色一味。非無妙體。不在躊躇。洞然明白。則函蓋乾坤也。又云。本非解會。排疊將來。不消一字。萬機頓息。則截斷眾流也。又云。若許他相見。從苗辦地。因語識人。即隨波逐浪也。

> The master addressed the assembly, saying: "Encompassing heaven and earth, discerning the finest detail, yet untouched by all conditions—how will you bear this?" The assembly had no reply. He answered for them: "One arrow pierces three barriers." Later, the Chan master Yuánmíng Mì of Déshān derived three phrases from these words: the phrase that encompasses heaven and earth, the phrase that cuts off all streams, and the phrase that follows the waves. <note>Yuánwù said: "The original true, the original empty—one color, one flavor. It is not without wondrous substance, yet leaves no room for hesitation. Utterly clear and bright—this is 'encompassing heaven and earth.'" He also said: "Fundamentally not a matter of understanding or grasping, piled up and presented—without using a single word, all functions cease at once—this is 'cutting off all streams.'" He also said: "If allowed to meet it, discern the root from the sprout, recognize the person through the words—this is 'following the waves.'"</note>
