> The Single Word Barrier

僧問師。如何是雲門劍。師云祖　如何是玄中的。師云𡎺如何是吹毛劍。師云。骼又云胔　如何是正法眼。師云普。三身中那身說法。師云要　如何是啐啄之機。師云響。殺父殺母。佛前懺悔。殺佛殺祖。甚處懺悔。師云露如何是祖師西來意。師云師　靈樹一默處如何上碑。師云師久雨不晴時如何。師云劄鑿壁偷光時如何。師云恰承古有言了。即業障本來空。未了應須還宿債。未審二祖是了是未了。師云確。

> A monk asked the master, "What is the Cloud Gate Sword?" The master said, "Ancestor." "What is the Profound Within?" The master said, "Earth." "What is the Hair-Splitting Sword?" The master said, "Bone." He added, "Corpse." "What is the True Dharma Eye?" The master said, "Universal." "Among the three bodies, which body preaches the Dharma?" The master said, "Essential." "What is the moment of pecking and breaking through the shell?" The master said, "Echo." "Killing father and mother, one repents before the Buddha. Killing the Buddha and the patriarchs—where does one repent?" The master said, "Revealed." "What is the meaning of the Patriarch coming from the West?" The master said, "Master." "How is the Silent Place of the Ling Tree inscribed on the stele?" The master said, "Master." "When the long rain does not clear, what then?" The master said, "Pierce." "When boring through the wall to steal light, what then?" The master said, "Exactly." "It is said of old: 'Once understood, karmic obstacles are originally empty. If not yet understood, one must still repay past debts.' I wonder, was the Second Patriarch understood or not yet understood?" The master said, "Firm."

一日示眾。會佛法者。如恒河沙。百草頭上。代將一句來。自代云俱　師凡對機。往往多用此酬應。故叢林目之。曰一字關云。

> One day, the Master addressed the assembly: "Those who understand the Dharma are as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. On the tip of every blade of grass, deliver a single phrase for me." Then he answered for himself, saying: "Together." The Master often used this method in responding to students. Therefore, the monastic community referred to it as the "One-Word Barrier."
