> Opportunities

僧問。十二時中。如何得不空過。師云。爾向甚處著此一問。僧云。學人不會。請師舉。師索筆成偈云。舉不顧即差互。擬思量何劫悟傳燈。

> A monk asked, "In the course of the twelve hours, how can one avoid letting time pass in vain?" The master replied, "Where did you pick up this question?" The monk said, "This student does not understand. Please, Master, give an explanation." The master took up a brush and composed a verse: If you raise it without turning back, you miss the mark. If you try to think it through, in what lifetime will you awaken?

問雪峯。如何是學人自己。峯云。築著鼻孔。僧舉似師。師云。爾作麼生會。其僧方思惟。師亦以前頌示之雪峯廣錄。

> Someone asked Xuefeng, "What is the true self of the practitioner?" Xuefeng replied, "When you bump your nose." The monk brought this to the master and recounted it. The master asked, "How do you understand it?" Just as the monk was pondering, the master also showed him the previous verse.

福朗上座因僧問。如何是透法身句。師云。北斗裏藏身。朗罔測其旨。遂造焉。師一見便把住云。道道朗擬議。師托開有偈云。雲門聳剔白雲低。水急遊魚不敢棲。人戶已知來見解。何勞再舉轢中泥。朗大悟出廣燈錄。

> When a monk asked Elder Fulang, "What is the phrase that penetrates the Dharma-body?" the Master said, "Hiding within the Northern Dipper." Fulang could not grasp the meaning, so he went to visit the Master. As soon as the Master saw him, he seized him and said, "Speak! Speak!" Just as Fulang was about to respond, the Master pushed him away and recited a verse: "At Yunmen's peak, white clouds hang low; In swift currents, fish dare not dwell. Once you enter the door, your insight is known— Why trouble to stir the mud in the rut?" Upon hearing this, Fulang experienced a great awakening.
