> Essential Points

> The Shaoyang lineage flows from the source of Dejiao. First meeting Muzhou, he drew forth the drill of the Qin era. Sending word to Xianggu, he cast off the shackles from his neck. He made the southern turtle's nose leap before him, struck the eastern carp, and rain poured down in torrents. He upheld the three phrases as the key, grasped a single word as the pivot. Hiding within the stars of the Northern Dipper, walking alone upon the waters east of the mountain. With clear vision and discerning gaze, not a hair's breadth was violated. Beyond norms, he captured and released, deciding before words were spoken. Truly, where the sword's edge finds a path, the iron wall has no gate. Overturning the tangled vines of convention, cutting away ordinary views and understandings. Blazing flames allow no approach, swift thunder leaves no time for thought. Because his insight was vast and penetrating, his realization naturally became broad and great. Flowers bloomed on the spiritual tree, fruits ripened in the fragrant grove. He upheld the balance of buddhas and patriarchs, opened the eyes of humans and gods. Yet why did clear springs turn turbid, lush roots give way to withered branches? Falsely establishing causes and conditions of the Way-eye, mistakenly creating distinctions of sound and form. Drilling into each other, clinging to language—they brought disgrace upon their ancestors, the fault lies with later learners. This is the style of the Yunmen school.

> Whenever the master met a monk, he would always gaze intently at them and say, "Mirror." If the monk hesitated, he would exclaim, "Hah!" His disciples recorded this as "Gaze, Mirror, Hah!" Later, Yuanming Mi removed the word "Gaze," calling it "Extracting the Gaze." His descendants lost the true meaning. When guiding others, they would glare angrily, calling it "lifting the spirit," calling it "not recognizing sounds and forms," calling it "pointing directly to realization." This was passed down as the "eye of the Way." Beita Zuo once laughed at this and composed a verse, which included the lines: "Even if you were as clever as Zhang Liang, in the end, you would find it hard to apply here." In this passage, the so-called "falsely establishing the eye of the Way as a cause" and "mistakenly creating distinctions in sounds and forms" refer to this.
