> Five Ranks Sequence

夫黑白未分。難為彼此。玄黃之後。方位自他。於是借黑權正。假白示偏。正不坐正。夜半虛明。偏不坐偏。天曉陰晦。全體即用。枯木華開。全用即真。芳叢不艶。摧殘兼帶及盡玄微。玉鳳金鸞分疎不下。是故威音那畔。休話如何。曲為今時由人施設。略陳管見以示方隅。冀諸同心。幸毋撫掌。

> Before black and white are distinguished, it’s hard to speak of this and that. Only after the colors of heaven and earth appear do positions like self and other arise. Thus, we borrow black to provisionally represent the true, and use white to temporarily indicate the partial. The true does not dwell in truth— in the depth of night, emptiness is bright. The partial does not dwell in partiality— at daybreak, shadows still linger. The whole substance is just its function— a withered tree blooms. All function is just the real— a fragrant grove does not show off its beauty. To break down and carry along, exhausting the subtle mystery— jade phoenix and golden luan cannot be separated or ranked. Therefore, beyond the sound of creation’s beginning— don’t ask “how.” Bending to suit the present time, it is established through human effort. I have briefly offered my humble view to point out a direction. I hope fellow seekers of the same heart will not just clap in amusement.
