> Ming'an's Five Positions of Host and Guest

安曰。正中偏乃垂慈接物。即主中賓。第一句奪人也。偏中正有照有用。即賓中主。第二句奪境也。正中來乃奇特受用。即主中主。第三句人境俱奪也。兼中至乃非有非無。即賓中賓。第四句人境俱不奪也。兼中到出格自在。離四句絕百非。妙盡本無之妙也。

> An said: "The True within the Apparent is to extend compassion and engage with beings—this is the Host within the Guest. The first phrase takes away the person. The Apparent within the True has illumination and function—this is the Guest within the Host. The second phrase takes away the environment. Coming from the True is a wondrous, unique experience—this is the Host within the Host. The third phrase takes away both person and environment. Arriving at the Integrated is neither existence nor non-existence—this is the Guest within the Guest. The fourth phrase takes away neither person nor environment. Reaching the Integrated is to transcend patterns and be at ease, leaving behind the four propositions and cutting off all negations, perfectly exhausting the wonder that is originally without."
