> Jingyin Discusses Internal and External Succession Among Royal Lineages

> Jiyin said: "This is like the Tang Dynasty's Duke Guo and General Li Xiping. Both were called kings, yet not by birthright, but through their meritorious deeds. Emperor Gaozu's Prince of Qin and Emperor Xuanzong's Prince Su were born into the imperial family—they were of royal lineage, not elevated by merit. Those called 'inner succession' achieve without striving—merit without merit. The ancient sages valued this. Those called 'outer succession' rely on achievements and effort, thus also called 'borrowed merit.' Master Caoshan's verse says: 'When the wondrous bright essence is fully realized, one knows the harm of attachment; strength lies in meeting conditions without borrowing.' Master Yunju Hongjue said: 'In every matter, one penetrates; in every thing, one understands. Such a one is called a 'completer of affairs,' yet never called 'noble and exalted.' Know this: the path of true nobility stands apart."
