> Attachment to Sights and Sounds

> The Silent Voice said: In the Vimalakirti Sutra, to break the notion of harmony and unity, one should accept food. To transcend acceptance, one should partake of that food. Entering a village with the thought of it as an empty gathering, what is seen with the eyes is like what a blind person sees; what is heard with the ears is like an echo; what is smelled is like the wind; what is tasted is not discriminated; sensations are received like the realization of wisdom. Knowing all phenomena as illusory appearances, without inherent nature or other-nature, originally unborn, now without cessation. This is the basis for establishing the principle of not cutting off sounds and forms. It also said: Subhuti does not see the Buddha and does not hear the Dharma. Those six non-Buddhist teachers are your teachers. You left home under them. Where your teachers fall, you too follow and fall—only then may you take food. This is the basis for establishing the principle of following the fall. It also said: Slandering the Buddha, destroying the Dharma, not entering the community, never attaining nirvana—if you are like this, only then may you take food. This is the basis for establishing the principle of noble falling. I once observed Caoshan. He compared himself to the Sixth Patriarch without shame, because he swept away the attachments of sage and ordinary beings with great skillful means. Nanquan said: "The Buddhas of the three times do not know it, but the cat and the white ox do know it." Yet this is not as good as Caoshan simply establishing the single word "fall."
