### 拈花

> Picking a Flower

王荊公問佛慧泉禪師云。禪家所謂世尊拈花。出在何典。泉云。藏經亦不載。公曰。余頃在翰苑。偶見大梵天王問佛決疑經三卷。因閱之。經文所載甚詳。梵王至靈山。以金色波羅花獻佛。舍身為床座。請佛為眾生說法。世尊登座拈花示眾。人天百萬。悉皆罔措。獨有金色頭陀。破顏微笑。世尊云。吾有正法眼藏涅槃妙心實相無相。分付摩訶大迦葉。此經多談帝王事佛請問。所以祕藏世無聞者。

> Wang Anshi asked Chan Master Fohui Quan, "The Chan tradition speaks of the World-Honored One holding up a flower. In which scripture does this appear?" Quan replied, "The Buddhist canon does not record it." Wang said, "Some time ago, while serving in the Hanlin Academy, I happened to come across the \*Mahābrahmā Devarāja Questions the Buddha to Resolve Doubts Sutra\* in three volumes. Upon reading it, I found the scripture describes this event in detail. The Brahmā King came to Vulture Peak, offered a golden \*utpala\* flower to the Buddha, and even used his own body as a seat, requesting the Buddha to teach the Dharma for the sake of all beings. The World-Honored One ascended the seat, held up the flower, and showed it to the assembly. Hundreds of thousands of heavenly and human beings were all at a loss—only the golden-robed elder monk broke into a subtle smile. The World-Honored One then said, 'I possess the treasury of the true Dharma eye, the wondrous mind of Nirvana, the true form of no-form. I now entrust it to Mahākāśyapa.' This sutra speaks mostly about matters of rulers and kings inquiring of the Buddha, which is why it has been kept secret and is unknown in the world."
