> The master ascended the platform and said: "Bright and aware at every moment—it cannot be obscured, like the moon following the flowing stream. Clear and distinct in every place—it cannot be confused, like rain chasing the moving clouds. In the end, what is it? The sage has no self, yet nothing is left undone." <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> "Mind pervades all directions, yet abides nowhere. Do you understand? On Mount Heng, clouds drift in patches; At Tiantai Peak, rain falls in streams."

> The Master ascended the hall and said: The mountains are draped in brocade clouds, radiant with the spirit of spring. The waters hold the green moon, serene with the hue of autumn. So it is, just so. Yet to speak of it is never quite right. Yellow-headed and blue-eyed, the message is hard to convey. <note>He struck the floor once with his staff and said:</note> In the West, they use Sanskrit. In this land, we use the language of Tang.

> The Master ascended the hall and said: I am the Dharma King, sovereign over all teachings. The cold clears, breaking the night; the frosty moon travels the sky. To bring peace to all beings, I appear in this world. Dew dampens the sleeves of my robe; autumn’s bitterness stirs the heart’s song. In the end, what is it? Walk the path and know. <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> For years the fixed eye dreams unawakened; in a single dawn, wind and moonlight reveal clarity. <note>He added:</note> Let go.

> The World-Honored One has secret words: the moon is full in the cold pond on a night. Kāśyapa does not conceal them: clouds adorn the withered tree with beauty. If a person can find life in death, and death in life, then they will know there is a message here. <note>He spreads both hands and says:</note> The fragrant forest is rich with the breath of spring; a single point of spiritual light illuminates the world.

> The master ascended the platform and said: The true suchness, the ultimate reality—all is perfectly clear. Mountain clouds drift gently, while river waters surge and flow. Traces embrace the stream of the cold brook; sounds carry the pines of the chilly peaks. Everywhere, Guanyin enters the gate of principle. In every household, the ancient Buddha's hall reveals the mind. If someone wishes to know, how can they truly know? Can you discern it? <note>He gave a shout and said:</note> Mountains and rivers do not stand apart; everywhere is radiant light. Now tell me, where exactly is this radiant light? Ah-lu-lu, ji—what kind of verse is this?

> The master ascended the hall and said: The summit of Mount Tai is high, its shadow sinks into the waves of the four seas. Before the hall, clouds surge, their force swallows the bright moon of the nine heavens. Distinguishing staff and whisk, tempering in the furnace and hammer— when it comes to this, how does a true practitioner take a bite? <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> Do you understand yet? When you let go, even tiles and pebbles shine, brilliant and radiant. When you hold on, even true gold loses its luster, dim and silent. In the end, what is it? If you don’t find the flowing stream, you should cross another mountain.

> The master ascended the hall and said: The moon deepens its chill shadow beneath the reeds; At night, I lodge by the river village, listening to the fisherman's song. This could be called the ultimate study of non-action, the idle wayfarer. Unaware that the clear dream grows old, Can one, sitting here, draped in robes, attain that luminous purity? Even so, how many truly understand the taste? <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> From now on, spring should have its own footsteps: A hundred flowers in their richness, the grass in its vibrant spirit.

> The master ascended the platform and said: "All of you seated here, your clear awareness illuminates past and present without interruption." He raised his whisk and said: "Do you see?" "Venerable Cloud of Virtue never left his mountain, yet the youth Sudhana met him on another peak. If he never left the mountain, why did they meet on a separate peak?" After a long pause, he said: "Wind brushes the cold water's surface; moon bathes in the cloud-mirrored sky."

> The master ascended the hall and said: The golden ox plows with hooves of gleaming silver, turning over the field of kalpas and emptiness, opening it wide. Leaving no trace of mud on the ancient and present paths, the cowherd’s distant flute rises into the clouds. A single breath gives rise to all virtues, transforming and acting. Luminous, it moves step by step; intimately, it turns the body. If Virtue Cloud does not descend the mountain, who will meet him? Another mountain— through experience, one grows in wisdom. Good Wealth is separated by passes and peaks. After all, how does one establish one’s life? <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> The mountain is empty, wind drops stones; the tower is still, moonlight enters the door.

> The master ascended the hall and said: One who walks well does not shift both feet. One who enters well does not move the double doors. In the clear autumn night, cold, the moon at the heart of the waves— Who asks of quiet meditation? Even friends are few. Coming and going, from the beginning, one has never been aware. Thus, the monk Tengteng understood. Yuan Ge sang: Today, let it be—free and easy. Tomorrow, free and easy—let it be. After all, before the ancient Buddha hall, There is nothing to accept, nothing to reject. Students must grasp it in just this way.

> The Master ascended the platform and said: Without the labor of purifying the nine cauldrons, the flow is clear. A hundred flowers blossom anew before the wooden rooster's tree. The moon is reported, the mirror wheel polished on the vine. Do you understand? <note>He hung the whisk on the corner of the meditation seat and said:</note> What need is there to raise the whisk or lift the staff? When the state has worthy ministers, the people are all at peace. All of you in the hall—how will you discuss this ready-made case? Very difficult, very difficult.

> The master ascended the hall and said: "Green ivy clings to the tall pine's strength; the red-tailed carp vies with the waves at Yu Gate. Is there anyone who can rise above?" <note>Raising the whisk, he said:</note> "The precious sword, once drawn, tests its frosty edge—why let dust and grime gather in its sheath?" <note>With a shout, he said:</note> "Those who transcend boundaries understand." <note>He then said:</note> "In the treasury of our king, there is no such blade." <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> "Enough."

> The Master ascended the platform and said: Thought after thought, let no doubt arise. On the emerald river, stillness reigns. Guanyin, pure and holy. The green bamboo—the true suchness body. Amidst suffering, death, and calamity, She once added blossoms to brocade. She can be our refuge and support. The mountain hues are fragrant still in spring. After all, how is it? The world without mind—dust does not stain. Mountains and rivers endless—intent holds no craft. <note>Then, tossing down the whisk, he said:</note> Now, lower your voice.

> The master ascended the hall and said: From a single flower blooms the essential teaching of the Five Houses; On a single leaf rests the secret key of the Nine Rooms. Morning and evening, this alone is enough— Why search for jade branches in a forest of jade? After a long pause, he said: In the empty valley, a voice echoes—a wondrous response; In every speck of dust, in every world, the lineage of Bodhidharma is present. He then said: The gate.

> The master ascended the platform and said: One loom weaves brocade robes, Fit for the bed of a peaceful noble. Only allow treasures to be piled here, And carefully hold the jade needle upright above. In the end, what is it? <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> Know that the Buddha’s three thousand realms Are all contained within our emperor’s single transformation.

> The Master ascended the platform and said: "A patch of idle land, overgrown with weeds, Has never been hoed. Who will take up the golden hoe? Only then will the jade-like skill be revealed. A needle without an eye, yet the hole is fine; A thread without a head, yet the tip is long. Thus it is said: Before the ancient mirror stand, wild grasses flourish; They have never met with humans or devas. After all, how should it be? Use the mouth beyond the kalpas, To rightly discern that person's mind."

> The Master ascended the platform and said: The meaning of Buddha-nature lies in the right time and conditions. Together, we move the spirit boat to the ferry crossing. The jade unicorn, bathed in moonlight, departs from the starry river; The golden phoenix, carrying blossoms, descends from the painted tower. If you can understand your own mind in this way, You will also merge with the essence of all phenomena. Thus, Master Dongshan said: "Come to the very bottom, and see thoroughly like this." After all, what is it? Within, nothing can be grasped; Without, it is beyond thought. Do you understand? <note>Hanging the whisk on the corner of the meditation seat, he said:</note> What is this?

> The master ascended the platform and said: On Vulture Peak, there is no master’s phrase; At the foot of Shaoshi Peak, the wondrous is not transmitted. If you can speak directly from here, you can repay the kindness that cannot be repaid. But after all, how is it to be done? High in the sky, the sun rises, yet the mist remains cold; All over the earth, the moon shines, while the rain clears. Do you understand? <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> The plum blossoms still bloom red before the steps.

> The master ascended the platform and said: "The emperor's power is as weighty as the mountains; the sovereign's grace is as deep as rain and dew. The crimson sky shifts its steps; the clear dawn wind turns back. Wild chrysanthemums hold gold in their mouths; mountain springs rinse jade. Precisely at such a moment, what are you doing? It is one thought that spans ten thousand years; one breath that joins in harmony; all phenomena are born and formed. After all, where is the true person of no rank?" <note>He raised his whisk and said:</note> "Late at night the water is cold, and the fish do not feed; the boat is fully loaded, yet empty, as the bright moon floats upon it."

> The master ascended the platform and said: A long sword leans against the sky, a bright pearl rests in the palm. In the vast emptiness, the moon appears; the old rabbit holds frost in its mouth. The great sea is without wind, yet the splendid whale spits waves. At times, beneath a ten-thousand-year pine, I strike the golden bell. At times, before the gate of samadhi, I grasp the jade seal. After all, what is it? Try to understand this thoroughly. <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> Observe that which is ancient and distant—it is just like today.

> The Master ascended the hall and said: The field is stable and secure, words and actions are profound and subtle. Arriving at this point, the path of knowing and hearing is severed, and there is no companion. Walking alone, yet take one more step—become a water buffalo. This eye can be brought forth. If it is not brought forth, what is there to live by? Are you all alive or dead? The path of speech is cut off—it is not past, not future, not present. <note>He lifted his staff and said:</note> The Tiantai staff is dark and rough.

> The master ascended the hall and said, "I will cite a case. Yangshan asked Weishan, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' Weishan said, 'A fine lantern.' Yangshan asked, 'Is that it?' Weishan said, 'What did you just say?' Yangshan replied, 'A fine lantern.' Weishan said, 'Indeed, you do not understand.'" The master said, "Do not approach the dark room of ignorance. The evening sun and the mountains reflect each other in crimson. The dust of delusion cannot be gathered anywhere. Coming early or leaving late, the true wind is lost. After all, how do you understand this? Do you grasp it thoroughly?" <note>He gave a shout and said,</note> "The southern mountain towers toward the sea; the northern peak touches the high clouds. Reflect on this."

> The master ascended the hall and cited an example. A monk asked Master Caoshan, "What is the style of the cloth sack?" Caoshan said, "How marvelous! This old man's face is full of smiles." The monk asked, "What is there to avoid or fear?" Caoshan said, "Entering the monks' hall in the morning, returning to the abbot's quarters in the evening." The master said, "The form of clouds, the essence of water, embracing the whole body. Virtue and function are not solitary, the Way is truly intimate. The youthful and charming still have a stage; flower trellises spread brocade, butterflies flutter frequently. Now tell me, where is the cloth sack right now? Old Master Caoshan saw it and had his share. And what about this mountain monk?" <note>Pointing in front, he said</note> Look! On the tip of every blade of grass, the leisurely monk becomes the pillar and lantern, expounding the Dharma. Investigate!

> The Master ascended the hall and cited an ancient worthy's words: "The Way cannot be parted from for even a moment. If it could be parted from, it would not be the Way—do not seek it through thought." The Master then said: "Now tell me, what is the Way? The field of the mind holds a spiritual sprout. Without moving the golden hoe, cease tilling. Why then, beneath the tall pines and slender bamboos, do wind and rain, master and guest, chase after spring and autumn?" Addressing the assembly of Chan practitioners, he said: "Ultimately, how is it to be found? If you seek, you will know it cannot be seen. Now tell me, what is it, exactly?" <note>He raised his whisk and said:</note> "Is it this very function, or apart from this function? Investigate."

> The master ascended the hall and raised an example. A monk asked Caoshan, "What is the true human body?" Caoshan said, "You are a hollow human body." The monk asked, "What livelihood does the family business understand?" Caoshan replied, "There is no recollection of right and wrong entanglements." The monk bowed. Caoshan said, "If it is truly like this, today is not in vain." The master said, "Pure and wondrous, wondrously understanding livelihood; open and bright, bright in the family style. Know that the body stands alone, distinct and clear; vast and all-pervading, this is the essence." O virtuous meditators, when mind and traces both vanish, the body bears no scars—this is the true human body. If it is not like this, one is merely a hollow person practicing.

> The master ascended the hall and raised a case: A monk asked Caoshan, "What is the place where the four corners tread the earth?" Caoshan said, "Enter the great samadhi, where differences are serene and clear." The monk asked, "Does discriminating wisdom still exist?" Caoshan replied, "Yes, yes." The monk bowed. Caoshan said, "The phoenix nest fledglings are all fine; the dragon gate guests are ever new." The master said: What is "the four corners tread the earth"? Enter samadhi, yet discriminating wisdom remains. If there is a matter but it is not understood, do you know or not know its original energy? Brothers, after all, how do you proceed? Illuminate the eastern lands of eighteen thousand worlds; in heaven and among humans, the golden-hued honored one is to be inquired of.

> The master ascended the hall and raised a case: A monk asked Caoshan, "What is the realm of pure non-learning?" Caoshan said, "Clouds exhale the moon amid the waves; the sky stretches mountains beyond the rain." The monk asked, "What about when one goes there?" Caoshan said, "The spirit is naturally distinct—no divine brush can paint it." The monk bowed. Caoshan said, "He does not accept others' bows—what then?" The master said: Arriving at the realm of pure non-learning—how could words describe it? "The spirit is naturally distinct—no divine brush can paint it." All of you, tell me: What is the realm of pure non-learning? <note>After a long pause, he said:</note> The locust tree's summer days grow long; the wheat ripens in autumn's cool breeze.

> The Master ascended the hall and cited the case: When Huixia visited Caoshan, he asked, "What is the Buddha's robe?" Caoshan said, "You must be able to wear it." Huixia said, "What about when a student can wear it?" Caoshan said, "That is not your realm." Huixia said, "Does the master have such a realm?" Caoshan said, "This old monk also cannot wear it." Huixia said, "Then is there no skillful means?" Caoshan said, "You must be able to wear it from the field of formlessness." Huixia said, "What about when one wears it from the field of formlessness?" Caoshan said, "After birth, there is still one more phrase." As Huixia prepared to speak further, Caoshan struck him. Huixia bowed and withdrew. Later, Caoshan had an attendant summon Huixia. When Huixia arrived, Caoshan drew the character for "rice" and gave it to him. Huixia received it, held it up, and said, "Excellent, excellent! The robe of the formless field of merit." Caoshan said, "Just so, just so." The Master said: "A single grain once grew in the field of formlessness; testing the potential of its diverse sprouts comes first. The Buddhas of the Glorious Eon borrowed its power; the shade of the twin trees is fundamentally natural. Great Virtuous Ones, this Caoshan—after the old man's rice robe, Master Huixia of Caoshan had already attained the ability to wear it. Now, here, who will wear it for me?" <note>He then raised his whisk and said:</note> "Is this the Buddha's robe, or is that the rice robe? Everyone eats the right livelihood; every Buddha transmits rightly. What the patch-robed monk wears—all beings' living eyes. After all, is it not the rice robe? Investigate!"
