> Walking Meditation Samadhi

> In the chapter on proper cultivation in the Great Calming and Contemplation, there are four kinds of samādhi. The second is the constant walking samādhi. In Sanskrit it is called \*pratyutpanna\*, which in Chinese means "Buddha standing." When this samādhi is accomplished, one sees the Buddhas of the ten directions standing in the air, like observing stars on a clear night. The practice period lasts ninety days. The practice hall should be adorned and decorated. One should not accept personal invitations to meals. One should bathe and wear clean clothes. Apart from eating, drinking, and using the toilet, one continuously walks day and night without stopping. One should make a great vow: "Even if my bones rot and my tendons wither, if this samādhi is not accomplished, I will never rest." The mouth constantly recites the name of Amitābha Buddha. The mind constantly recollects the Buddha without rest. Amitābha is taken as the master of the practice. When the practice is accomplished, one becomes equal to all the Buddhas of the ten directions. Contemplate from the thousand-spoked wheel mark on the soles of the feet, going through each characteristic in reverse order, up to the invisible top of the head. Then contemplate from the top of the head down to the thousand-spoked wheel mark. Clearly understand that the mind that is recollecting and the Buddha that is being recollected are empty, provisional, and the middle—beyond conceptual thought. If a person wishes to obtain wisdom like the great ocean, and to see all the Buddhas without employing supernatural powers, one should cultivate this samādhi. Among all meritorious practices, it is the foremost. It is the parent of all Buddhas. All Thus-Come Ones are born from this practice.
