> Words of the Wise

> The Great Master Zhiyi of the Tiantai school, at Shicheng Temple in the east of Shan, was about to enter final cessation. He said to his disciples, "I know my time is up. I will go no further. Today my work is done, like a carpenter setting down his axe or a musician breaking his strings." After chanting the title of the Contemplation of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life Sutra, he continued, "The forty-eight vows adorn the Pure Land. The jeweled ponds and precious trees are easy to reach, yet few go there. The great chariot appears. Even those who repent in a single thought may be reborn there—how much more those who cultivate precepts and samadhi, who walk the noble path with real power? Their efforts are never in vain. The sound of the Dharma's voice does not deceive." Zhilang then asked, "May we know what stage of realization you have attained? Where will you be reborn after passing? Whom can we look to as our guide?" The Master replied, "I have not led a large following. If I have purified the six sense faculties, benefited others at my own expense, I have reached only the fifth stage of practice. You ask where I will be reborn—my teachers and friends, attended by Guanyin, are all coming to welcome me. Whom can you look to as a guide? Have you not heard that the precepts are your master, and the four kinds of samadhi are your clear guide?" He then instructed the director of chanting, "When a person's life is ending, the sound of bells and chimes can strengthen their right mindfulness. Let the sound last long and continue, until their breath ceases. Why wait until the body grows cold to ring the bell? As for worldly mourning customs, none should be followed." With these words, he chanted the names of the Three Jewels and entered samadhi, as if falling into deep meditation.
