### 雄俊入冥

> Brave Hero Enters the Underworld

唐大曆間。成都僧雄俊。膽勇過人。不守戒律。而善於講說。所得施利。非法而用。甞罷道從戎。尋逃難。又為僧。守名節者。多畏避之。因聞經說。一稱佛名。滅八十億劫生死重罪。乃大喜曰。賴有此耳。自是雖為惡。而念佛不輟。丁未二月。忽暴亡。經宿復甦。言。至冥司。冥官曰。悞追汝也。然汝罪惡不少可略。經塗炭。令吏卒驅入獄中。俊勵聲曰。一稱佛名。滅無量罪。俊雖造惡。不至五逆。豈佛語無憑耶。吏亟奏王。王召至。語之曰。汝之念佛。本無深信。可還人間精進修之。毋復放逸。人聞其說。嘲之曰。此地獄漏網人也。既而入城南之西山。齋戒念佛。越四年。辛亥三月。緇素駢集。俊喜曰。吾時至矣。爾輩還城。見吾親知。為俊語曰。俊以念佛得生淨土矣。無以為地獄漏網人也。語笑之間。端坐而化。

> During the Dali era of the Tang Dynasty, there was a monk in Chengdu named Xiong Jun. He was unusually bold and fearless, but did not observe the precepts. However, he was skilled at preaching. The offerings he received were spent in improper ways. At one point, he left monastic life to join the military, but soon fled from danger and returned to being a monk. Those who upheld their reputation and moral integrity often kept their distance from him. Once, he heard a teaching that even a single recitation of the Buddha's name could eradicate the heavy sins of eighty billion eons of birth and death. This delighted him greatly, and he said, "Thank goodness for this!" From then on, although he continued to commit wrongdoings, he never stopped reciting the Buddha's name. Suddenly, in the second month of the year Dingwei, he died abruptly. The next day, he revived and recounted his experience. He said he had been taken to the underworld. The official there told him, "We mistakenly summoned you. However, your sins are not few, and you must at least experience some suffering." He then ordered the demon attendants to throw Xiong Jun into the prison. Xiong Jun loudly proclaimed, "A single recitation of the Buddha's name eradicates countless sins. Though I have committed wrongdoings, they are not the five heinous offenses. How could the Buddha's words be unreliable?" The attendant quickly reported this to the King. The King summoned Xiong Jun and told him, "Your recitation of the Buddha's name was not with deep faith. Return to the human realm and practice diligently. Do not be negligent again." When people heard his story, they mocked him, saying, "This is someone who slipped through the net of hell." Later, Xiong Jun went to the western mountains south of the city, where he observed strict precepts and continued reciting the Buddha's name. Four years later, in the third month of the year Xinhai, monks and laypeople gathered together. Xiong Jun joyfully said, "My time has come. You all should return to the city and tell my friends and acquaintances: 'Xiong Jun, through reciting the Buddha's name, has attained rebirth in the Pure Land. Do not think of him as one who slipped through the net of hell.'" In the midst of saying this with a smile, he passed away peacefully in a seated posture.
