The tangled vines of the Buddhas and Patriarchs—soaked in water they do not rot, burned by fire they are not destroyed—spread their branches and intertwine without end. The *Chan School’s Linked Pearls of Ancient Verses* was compiled by the Precious Mirror Master, Dharma-nature; the Successor, Master Lu-an, made a continuation collection, which was carved into blocks and printed for a long time. Lately, for other reasons, those blocks were scattered among the populace. In the summer of 1389, I worried they might be lost, so I asked a Dharma friend to redeem them and store them in the secluded dwelling of Great Compassion Mountain—this was on the twenty-eighth day of the sixth month. The next day, a fire arose at the place where the blocks had previously been kept; driven by a fierce wind, it consumed hundreds of homes. Ah! How extraordinary this is! Are the tangled vines of the Buddhas and Patriarchs truly so spiritually potent? Or was it divine protection that caused this? Respectfully, I provided funds from my own robes to have the blocks repaired and completed, to broaden their circulation and forever extend the life of wisdom. Therefore, I record the circumstances of how the blocks were obtained and this strange event, to mark the time.
洪武二十五年嵗在壬申二月十有九日中天竺住山沙門幻居淨戒識
In the twenty-fifth year of the Hongwu reign, the year being Ren Shen, on the nineteenth day of the second month, this was recorded by the monk Huān Jū Jìng Jiè, who served as the abbot of Zhong Tianzhu Monastery.
