The "Collected Annotations and Essential Meanings of the Four Teachings" was compiled by the eminent Tiantai monk Lingyao of the Qing Dynasty. It serves as a commentary and distillation of the essential Tiantai doctrinal work "The Four Teachings" by the Sui Dynasty master Zhiyi. Born during the revival of Tiantai studies in the Qing Dynasty, Lingyao extracted the essence of previous commentaries and systematically elucidated the Tiantai school's classification system of teachings—the Tripitaka, Shared, Distinct, and Perfect teachings—as well as the stages of practice, in a concise and essential manner. This book is precise in content and clear in structure, regarded as an important step for delving into Tiantai doctrine and contemplation. It plays a pivotal role in understanding Tiantai philosophy, bridging past and future, and holds a significant place among Tiantai texts. It is an indispensable and authoritative commentary for studying the classification of teachings in Chinese Buddhism.
