> Monk Zhu Sengxian

> Monk Sengxian, whose secular surname was Fu, was from the Beidi region. He was steadfast in ascetic practices and strict in observing the precepts, eating only vegetables and reciting scriptures, with meditation as his primary endeavor. He often lived alone in the mountains and forests, practicing the ascetic life far from the worldly. Sometimes he would enter meditation for several days at a time, yet showed no sign of hunger. During the time when Liu Yao was ravaging the western capital, the court and society were in chaos. Sengxian, at the end of the Taixing era of the Jin Dynasty, traveled south to the Jiangdong region. He then visited famous mountains, continuing his lifelong practices. Later, he fell severely ill, and with deep sincerity, he fixed his thoughts on the Western Pure Land. He then saw Amitayus Buddha appearing in his true form, whose light illuminated his body, and all his suffering was cured. That very evening, he rose to bathe, and told his companions and those tending to him in his illness what he had seen, also expounding on the causes and effects of karma with great clarity and precision. The next morning, he passed away while sitting upright in meditation. An extraordinary fragrance filled the room, lingering for over ten days before fading.
