> Monk Jingdu was from Yuhang, Wuxing. In his youth, he loved hunting and once shot a pregnant deer, causing it to miscarry. The mother deer, despite her pain, still licked her young on the ground. Jingdu was deeply moved by this, and thus broke his bow and arrows, renounced the world, and became a vegetarian monk. He recited over three hundred thousand words of scriptures. He often lived alone in the mountains and marshes, practicing meditation and recitation. Whenever there was a feast or gathering in the town, he would personally light nine lamps on his body and sit upright through the night as an offering, and he did this for many years. Later, he suddenly told his disciples, "Prepare fragrant hot water for a bath." He then taught several thousand chapters of Dharma, warning them about the causes and effects of birth and death. After saying this, he passed away peacefully. The sounds of flutes and drums and fragrant smoke came from the sky. Many of his relatives and disciples, dozens of people, all witnessed and heard this.
