The Shishi Liutie, also known as the Yichu Liutie, was compiled by the monk Yichu of Qinglong Temple during the Later Zhou dynasty of the Five Dynasties period. Completed in the first year of the Xiande era (954 CE), this work systematically organizes Buddhist allusions, terminology, figures, and doctrines in the form of a categorized reference book, divided into six sections. Its content spans astronomy, geography, institutions, and cultivation methods, extensively citing the Tripitaka—the sutras, vinaya, and commentaries—as well as Chinese and foreign writings. As an early Chinese Buddhist encyclopedia, it integrates Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought, reflecting the characteristics of Buddhism’s localization during the Tang-Song transition. It holds significant documentary value for studying the cultural integration of Chinese Buddhism and is regarded as a pioneering reference work for Eastern Buddhist studies.
