第三十一祖道信大師者姓司馬氏世居河內後徙於蘄州之廣濟縣師生而超異㓜慕空宗諸解脫門宛如宿習既嗣祖風攝心無寐脅不至席者僅六十年隨大業中抵吉州值羣盜圍城七旬不解萬眾惶怖教令念摩訶般若時賊眾望雉堞間有神乃相謂曰城內必有異人不可攻矣稍稍引去師却返蘄春住破頭山學侶雲臻一日往黃梅縣路逢一小兒骨相竒秀異乎常童師問曰子何姓荅曰姓即有不是常姓師曰是何姓荅曰是佛性師曰汝無性邪荅曰性空故師默識其法器即俾侍者至其家於父母所乞令出家父母以宿緣故殊無難色遂捨為弟子以至付法傳衣偈曰華種有生性因地華生生大緣與信合當生生不生

> The thirty-first patriarch, Great Master Daoxin, whose family name was Sima, originally lived in Henei before later moving to Guangji County in Qizhou. From birth, the Master was extraordinary; as a child, he admired the teachings of emptiness, and all paths to liberation came to him as if they were memories from past lives. After inheriting the patriarchal tradition, he focused his mind without sleep and did not let his ribs touch the mat for nearly sixty years. During the Daye era of the Sui dynasty, he arrived in Jizhou and encountered a siege by bandits that lasted seventy days without relief. The terrified masses sought his guidance, and he instructed them to recite the \*Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra\*. At that time, the bandits saw spirits standing atop the city walls and said to one another, "There must be an unusual person inside the city—we cannot attack." Gradually, they withdrew. The Master then returned to Qizhou and lived on Potou Mountain, where many students gathered like clouds. One day, while traveling to Huangmei County, he met a young boy with an extraordinary and outstanding bone structure, unlike ordinary children. The Master asked, "What is your surname?" The boy replied, "My surname exists but is not an ordinary surname." The Master asked, "What surname is it?" The boy replied, "It is Buddha-nature." The Master asked, "Do you have no nature, then?" The boy replied, "Nature is emptiness." The Master recognized in silence that the boy was a vessel for the Dharma. He sent an attendant to the boy's home to ask his parents for permission to let him leave home. Because of past affinities, his parents showed no reluctance and gladly gave him as a disciple. Ultimately, the Master transmitted the Dharma to him and gave him the robe, along with this verse: "The flower seed has the nature of birth; From the ground, the flower is born. When great conditions merge with faith, In birth, there is no birth."
