Sutra on the Garden Tree Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by Dharma Master Shi Hu, Imperial Commissioner of the Western Regions, Court Attendant, and Examiner of the Court of State Ceremonial,
Thus I have heard:
Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of the Orphans, near the city of Shravasti, together with a community of monks. At that time, the Buddha said to the monks: "You should know that in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three there is a great tree called the Garden Tree. Its roots extend for five yojanas, it rises a hundred yojanas high, and its branches and leaves spread out over fifty yojanas. Whenever the celestial beings come to enjoy themselves under that tree, they first see a half-unfurlment of new shoots appear. Seeing this, they experience joy and happiness. Not long after, leaves begin to unfurl, and when the celestial beings come again, their delight increases. Then, after some time, a jeweled net spreads over the tree as an ornament, and the celestial beings, coming under it, feel their joy multiply further. Next, small flower buds appear; when the celestial beings see them, their happiness grows. Following that, larger flower buds emerge, and the celestial beings' joy continues to increase. Then, half-open blossoms appear, further enhancing their delight. Finally, the entire Garden Tree is covered in full bloom. The flowers are pure and emit a uniquely wonderful fragrance. When a gentle breeze blows, the scent spreads for fifty yojanas; with a strong wind, it reaches a full hundred yojanas. A magnificent light shines from it for eighty yojanas. Once the tree is fully in bloom, the celestial beings, seeing it, experience joy far greater than before, and throughout the four months of summer, they stay under the tree, indulging in pleasure and delight."
The Buddha told the monks: "You should know that this garden tree has such qualities—its rare blossoms and extraordinary fragrance are loved and delighted in by people. The same is true for the disciples who hear the Dharma.
When the tree first sprouts shoots, it is like when a disciple first develops faith and leaves home to seek the path.
Next, when the tree develops leaves, it is like when a disciple shaves off hair and beard, dons the monastic robe, and takes on the appearance of a monastic.
Next, when the tree grows a canopy of precious foliage, it is like when a disciple turns away from desires, abandons unwholesome states, and, letting go of all kinds of thoughts and discriminations, attains the first meditation—the state of joy born from renunciation."
Again, when that tree produces the *chalaka* state, it is like a disciple who outwardly appears calm and silent while inwardly abiding peacefully, free from discursive thoughts. With a concentrated mind fixed on a single object, they attain the second *dhyana*, a state of joy and bliss born of meditative absorption.
Furthermore, when that tree produces the trumpet flower, it is like a practitioner of the Hearer path who has abandoned all attachment to pleasure. Their body becomes light and at ease, experiencing a wonderfully blissful happiness—this is comparable to attaining the third stage of meditative absorption, the samadhi of joy and bliss that is free from delight.
Furthermore, when that tree begins to bear fruit, it is like a disciple of the Buddha who, having set aside all sorrow, joy, and pleasure, dwells in equanimity and attains the fourth level of meditative absorption—the state of pure equanimity and mindful clarity.
"Furthermore, when that tree blossoms with wondrous flowers, releasing a rare fragrance enjoyed by all, it is like the arhats who have exhausted all defilements, no longer accumulating any more karmic seeds. They have realized the state beyond learning, with no future rebirth to come. Thus, they are revered by humans and gods alike, receiving great offerings—just as the tree's blossoms open, so too does their spiritual attainment unfold."
The Buddha told the monks: "You should know that the assembly of heavenly beings in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, each with their own unique and magnificent appearance, adorned in various ways, gather together in the Hall of Good Dharma, surrounding and listening to the Lord of Heaven, Shakra Devanam Indra, as he teaches the sublime Dharma. Likewise, all of you monks, having attained the fruits of realization, are pure and complete, fully established in the holy life, honored by all. You surround the World-Honored One and listen to the sublime Dharma — just like those heavenly beings."
