The Ten Dreams of King Prasenajit Sutra
Translated by the Western Regions Monk Zhu Tan Wulan, Eastern Jin Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
Once, the Buddha was staying in the Kingdom of Shravasti, at the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, King Prasenajit had ten strange dreams while sleeping at night. What were these ten?
First, he dreamed of three jars side by side—the two outer jars were full, and their vapor flowed back and forth between them, but none entered the empty jar in the middle.
Second, he dreamed that a horse was eating from its mouth, and its rear end was also eating.
Third, he dreamed that a small tree was blooming.
Fourth, he dreamed that the same small tree was bearing fruit.
Fifth, he dreamed that a man was asking for a rope, and behind him was a sheep, and the sheep was eating the rope.
Sixth, he dreamed that a fox was sitting on a golden bed and eating from a golden vessel.
Seventh, he dreamed that a large cow was sucking milk from its own calf.
Eighth, he dreamed that four oxen came from four directions, bellowing and charging toward each other, about to fight—but just as they were about to clash, they scattered, and he could not tell where they had gone.
Ninth, he dreamed that in a great pond, the water in the middle was muddy, while the water at the edges was clear.
Tenth, he dreamed that the waters of a large stream were flowing, all red.
When the king woke from these dreams, he was deeply frightened, fearing that he would lose his kingdom, his own life, and his wife and children.
The next morning, the king summoned his ministers, high officials, and all the ascetics and Brahmins who could interpret dreams. He asked them, "Last night, while I slept, I had ten dreams. These were the visions I saw. When I woke, I was terrified and felt no joy. Who among you can interpret these dreams for me?"
Among the ascetics, one Brahmin said, "I can interpret them for the king, but I fear that what the king hears will bring sorrow and distress."
The king replied, "Tell me plainly what you have seen. Do not hold anything back."
The Brahmin said, "All these dreams of the king are evil omens—none of them are auspicious. You must take your most beloved queen, the crown prince, your close attendants, servants, and slaves, and kill them all as sacrifices to the gods. Only then may the king be spared from calamity. As for your bedding, your precious treasures, and your finest belongings, all must be burned as offerings to the gods. If you do this, the king's life may be spared."
The king heard the Brahmin interpret his dream in this way, and he became deeply worried and unhappy. He retreated into his meditation chamber to ponder the matter. The king had a chief queen named Mani, who came to the king and asked him: “Why have you retreated to your chamber, so worried and unhappy? Have I done some wrong against you, my lord?”
The king replied: “You have done no wrong against me. I am merely troubled myself.”
The queen asked again: “What is it that troubles you so?”
The king said: “Do not ask me. What you would hear would bring you no joy.”
The queen insisted: “I am half of your very self. If there is good or ill, you should tell me. Why will you not share it with me?”
So the king told his queen: “Last night I dreamed ten things. When I woke from the dream, I was filled with great worry and fear, afraid I might lose my kingdom, myself, my wife, and my children. I summoned my ministers, high officials, and various holy men, and told them of my ten dreams. A Brahmin interpreted the dreams for me, saying: ‘You must take your most beloved queen, your prince, those close to you—your attendants, servants, slaves—and your white elephant and famed horses, and slaughter them all as an offering to heaven. You must also burn your bedding, your ornaments, and your precious possessions as an offering to heaven. Only then may the king himself be spared from calamity.’ It is for this reason that I am so worried and unhappy.”
The queen replied: “My lord, do not worry! Just as a person who buys gold tests it on a whetstone—beauty or ugliness, good or bad, its true quality shows upon the stone—so too the Buddha is now nearby, staying at his monastery not far from the kingdom. Why not go and ask him the meaning of your dream? Whatever the Buddha explains, you should follow that.”
The king then ordered his ministers to prepare the carriage, and they set out at once. Arriving at the Buddha's dwelling, he walked forward at a measured pace. The king descended from the carriage, approached the Buddha, and prostrated himself with his head at the Buddha's feet. Then he sat to one side and said to the Buddha: "Last night I dreamed ten things. First, I dreamed of three jars standing side by side—the two outer jars were full, and their vapors flowed back and forth between them, but none entered the empty jar in the middle. Second, I dreamed of a horse eating from its mouth while also eating from its hindquarters. Third, I dreamed of a small tree blooming with flowers. Fourth, I dreamed of a small tree bearing fruit. Fifth, I dreamed of a man asking for a rope, while behind him stood a sheep that kept eating the rope. Sixth, I dreamed of a fox sitting on a golden bed, eating from a golden vessel. Seventh, I dreamed of a great cow going back to suckle from its calf. Eighth, I dreamed of four oxen coming from four directions, bellowing as they charged toward one another—they seemed about to fight, yet they never clashed, and I could not tell where the oxen had gone. Ninth, I dreamed of a great pond whose center was muddy while its edges were clear. Tenth, I dreamed of a stream whose waters ran entirely red. Such were my dreams. When I woke, I was terrified, fearing that I might lose my kingdom, my body, my wife, and my children. I beg the Buddha to interpret these ten dreams and grant me your instruction."
The Buddha said: "Do not worry, great king! These dreams have no other meaning. They point to things that will come in future generations, not in this present age." The Buddha continued: "In the future, people will no longer respect moral laws and prohibitions. They will be given to lust and greed, jealousy and envy, never knowing contentment. They will have little sense of righteousness and no compassion, acting on impulse without any sense of shame or remorse."
The Buddha said: "First, you dreamed of three jars placed side by side. The two outer jars were full, and their vapor flowed back and forth between them, but none entered the empty jar in the middle. This signifies that in future times, the wealthy and powerful will follow one another and pay no attention to the poor. Your dream of the three jars, O King, points precisely to this. Do not be afraid, do not be afraid! There is nothing harmful to your kingdom, to the prince, or to your queen."
The Buddha said: "Secondly, the king dreamed of a horse eating with both its mouth and its rear. This refers to later generations when kings and high officials will consume the state's provisions and salaries, yet still exploit the common people without ever feeling satisfied. The king's dream of a horse eating with both its mouth and its rear points precisely to this. O king, do not be afraid, do not be afraid! For your kingdom, your prince, and your queen, there is no danger."
The Buddha said: "The third dream, seeing a small tree blossoming, signifies that in future generations, people will have white hair before reaching the age of thirty. Due to greed and strong desires, the young will age prematurely. O King, this is what your dream of a small tree blossoming means. Do not be afraid, do not be afraid! There is no danger to your kingdom, your prince, or your queen."
The Buddha said: "Fourth, the king dreamed of a small tree bearing fruit. This signifies that in future times, women under the age of fifteen will marry and bear children, returning with infants in their arms, yet feeling no shame. The dream of a small tree bearing fruit points precisely to this. O king, do not be afraid—there is no threat to your kingdom, your prince, or your queen."
The Buddha said, "Fifth, your dream of a person asking for a rope, with a sheep behind them eating the rope — this signifies that in future times, a husband who travels for business will leave his wife behind, and she will consort with other men and squander his wealth. Your dream of a person asking for a rope points precisely to this. Do not be afraid, O King — neither your kingdom, your prince, nor your queen will come to any harm."
