The Sutra of the Five Mothers and the Child was translated during the Three Kingdoms period by the translator Zhi Qian of the state of Wu. This sutra recounts the story of the causes and conditions between the Buddha Śākyamuni, in a past life when he was a śrāmaṇera, and five mothers. It elucidates how sentient beings suffer in the cycle of rebirth due to ignorance and must diligently cultivate the path to seek liberation. This sutra reflects the early Buddhist teachings on karma and filial piety, and is an important classic among the Chinese-translated Buddhist scriptures belonging to the Jātaka genre. It holds significant reference value for understanding Buddhist ethics and the characteristics of Buddhism during its initial transmission in China.
