### No. 1176-I佛祖因緣

> Buddha's Causes and Conditions

> The King of Drums Sutra states: In the distant, immeasurable past, there was a land called Wonderful Joy, ruled by King Kao Shih-chia. His grandfather was the Pure and Peaceful King, his father was the Turning Wheel King of the Moonlight, and his mother was the Beautiful and Wonderful Countenance Queen. The queen gave birth to three sons: the eldest was Moonlight, the second was Kao Shih-chia, and the third was Celestial Multitude. At that time, a Buddha appeared in the world, called the Tathagata of the Self-Abiding King. Kao Shih-chia renounced his royal throne and took refuge with the Buddha, becoming a monk with the name Dharma Treasury Bhikshu. He respectfully addressed the Tathagata and made forty-eight vast vows, vowing to universally liberate all beings in the ten directions. If even one of these vows remained unfulfilled, he swore not to attain Buddhahood. At that moment, the gods scattered flowers, the earth quaked greatly, and a voice in the sky proclaimed, "He will definitely become a Buddha"<note>named Amitabha</note>.

> The \*Karunāpuṇḍarīka Sūtra\* says: In a past aeon, there was a wheel-turning king named No Strife in Thought. His minister, Ocean of Jewels, was a spiritual friend. Together, they made vows before the Buddha Treasury of Jewels. The king said: "When I become a Buddha, I will be in a pure and peaceful world, gathering all beings." The minister said: "When I become a Buddha, I will be in a world of the five corruptions and suffering, liberating all beings." Who was the king No Strife in Thought? He was Amitābha Buddha. Who was the minister Ocean of Jewels? He was Śākyamuni Buddha. Thus, the sovereign and his minister were perfectly united, embodying the two approaches: gathering in and subduing. This is why Amitābha Buddha, in his Pure Land, draws beings toward him, while Śākyamuni Buddha, in this Saha world, teaches and transforms beings.

> <note>Those who are gentle and naturally inclined toward faith should be guided through the receptive approach—by explaining the virtues and splendor of the Pure Land. Those who are stubborn and self-righteous should be liberated through the corrective approach—by describing the sufferings and ups and downs of this Saha world.</note>
