### 杭州永明壽禪師戒無證悟人勿輕淨土

> A Warning from Chan Master Yongming Shou of Hangzhou: Do Not Underrate the Pure Land

設問曰。但見性悟道。便超生死。何用繫念彼佛。求生他方。答曰。真修行人。應自審察。如人飲水。冷煖自知。諸仁者當觀自己行解見性悟道。能如馬鳴龍樹否。得無礙辯才。證法華三昧。能如天台智者否。宗說皆通。行解兼修。能如忠國師否。此諸大士。皆明垂言教。深勸往生。葢是自利利他。豈肯悞人自悞。況往生傳所載。古今高士事跡。顯著非一。宜勤觀覽。以自照知又當自度。臨命終時。生死去住。定得自在否。自無始來。惡業重障。定不現前。此一報身。定脫輪迴否。三塗惡道。異類中行。出沒自由。定無苦惱否。天上人間。十方世界。隨意寄託。定無滯礙否。若也了了自信得及。何善如之。若其未也。莫以一時貢高却致。永劫沉淪。自失善利。將復誰尤。嗚呼哀哉。何嗟及矣。

> Question: If merely seeing one's nature and awakening to the Way already transcends birth and death, why bother focusing the mind on that Buddha and seeking rebirth in another land? Answer: True practitioners should examine themselves. As the saying goes, "When one drinks water, one knows for oneself whether it is cold or warm." Dear friends, reflect on your own practice and understanding—can you see your nature and awaken to the Way as Mātṛceṭa and Nāgārjuna did? Can you attain unobstructed eloquence and realize the Samādhi of the Lotus Sutra, as the Venerable Master Tiantai Zhiyi did? Can you master both doctrine and meditation, excelling in practice and understanding alike, as National Master Zhong did? These great masters all openly taught and earnestly encouraged rebirth in the Pure Land. This was for their own benefit and for the benefit of others—how could they mislead others and themselves? Moreover, the records of rebirth in the Pure Land document numerous eminent practitioners of both ancient and modern times. Their deeds are clear and abundant. You should diligently study these accounts to reflect on yourself. Furthermore, you should assess yourself honestly: at the moment of death, when separating from this life, will you be truly free? Since beginningless time, will your heavy karmic obstructions definitely not appear? Will this present body definitely escape the cycle of reincarnation? Will you be free to come and go without suffering among the three lower realms and other forms of existence? Will you be able to settle freely in the heavens, among humans, or in any of the ten directions without hindrance? If you can be fully confident in all these matters, then nothing could be better. But if not, do not let a moment of pride lead to endless downfall. Losing your own benefit and the benefit of others—who else is there to blame? Alas! How sad! What use is regret when it is too late?
